Historians to explore Shallow Ford

The Lewisville Historical Society and the Yadkin County Historical Society will present a seminar and walk to the historic Shallow Ford crossing on the Yadkin River on Saturday, March 8, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm, beginning and ending at Huntsville Baptist Church, 4901 Courtney-Huntsville Road, Yadkinville.
Local historians will lead discussions on the natural environment of the Shallow Ford, including its formation, its importance in the Westward Movement of the United States, and the three military events associated with it.
Then the group will drive to Williams Road in Forsyth County and walk to the Shallow Ford in Forsyth County. After their return, the group will return to the church for lunch.
After lunch, the group will walk along the Great Wagon Road to the Shallow Ford in Yadkin County. After their return, the group will walk to the site of the American Revolution Battle of Shallow Ford, October 14, 1780, the graves of Loyalists and the Patriot killed in the battle, and the Big Poplar Tree, which witnessed the battle.
Afterwards the group will return to the church for a review of the day.
Anyone who is interested is invited to attend, but space is limited to the first 100 participants. The walks are strenuous and neither the Lewisville Historical Society nor the Yadkin County Historical Society will be held responsible for accidents. Pets and children under 12 are not allowed, since childcare will not be provided. Soft drinks, water and snacks will be provided, but participants need to bring their own lunch.
