For the West Forsyth baseball team, the road to the state championship will end where it began — in Greensboro.
The Titans, co-conference champions of the Central Piedmont but a three seed from the CPC for the state playoffs, opened tournament play with a victory at Greensboro Grimsley.
Now, five wins later, they will return to Greensboro this Friday and Saturday to meet Richmond County for the NCHSAA 4-A state title. Game one will take place on Friday night at 5 p.m. Game two will be played on Saturday at 11 a.m. If necessary, game three will be held on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. All games will be held at the UNC-Greensboro baseball stadium.
West enters the Best-of-3 series with a 27-5 overall record. Richmond, which edged Raleigh Millbrook to win the Eastern Regional championship, comes in with a record of 23-7-1.
Both teams feature strong pitching and defense.
“It should be a very intense, well-played series,” mentioned West coach Brad Bullard. “There is great pitching on both sides. We have Michael (Bates) and Travis (Holden) and they have a very good left-hander (Nic Bullard) who is signed with UNC-Pembroke. Like all of our playoff games, I expect these games to come down to the wire.”
