Clemmons resident Frank Tursi, The Winston-Salem Journal science and medical reporter, has been chosen as one of 100 semi-finalists for the Journalist-In-Space project. Tursi served as news editor of The Clemmons Courier for five years. His selection made him the subject of numerous news interviews. Tursi is competing with some of the biggest names in journalism such as Walter Cronkite of CBS and Geraldo Rivera of ABC.

The Junior Girl Scout Troop 229 of Clemmons visited Washington, D.C., during the recent Easter holidays. The group visited the Mall area, Smithsonian Institute, Arlington National Cemetery and Embassy Row. Girl Scouts who went on the trip were Jenny Blevins, Annah Boyer, Cindy Claasen, Chris Cousart, Rose Duggins, Stephanie Eakes, Julie Foster, Anna Gerhardt, Stephanie Goodwin, Skye Haralson, Mary Beth Harkrader, Dixie Mattocks, Melea Nicks, Paige Parham, Ashley Shaver, Nancy Sokal, Wendy Sumner and Katie Tobin.

Mrs. Bobby G. Wooten was hostess for a meeting of the Shallowford Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of American Revolution. Mrs. Wooten conducted a tour of her wildflower garden prior to the meeting. Sherri Carswell and Richard Warden of Duke Power presented a program on energy conservation and management.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Blaine Harper of Styers Ferry Road, Clemmons, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on April 20 with a reception in the fellowship hall of Concord United Methodist Church. Hosts for the reception were the Harper’s children and grandchildren: Mr. and Mrs. Ken Harper of Lexington, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Windsort of Tobaccoville, and grandchildren Julie Harper, Mathew, Aaron and Elizabeth Windsor.

Two students at N.C. State University were among 201 students inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, national academic honor society. The students are Charles B. Fain, son of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Fain of Clemmons and Derek T. Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rick N. Young, of Clemmons.

The 1600 relay team of Dennis Warren, Curtis Clark, Bobby Paige and Mike Carruthers capped a West Forsyth track team rally with a first place finish over Kannapolis Brown last week. The only Titan victory in the field events came when Kevin Young recorded a 12-foot jump in the pole vault. Russell Tanner claimed wins in the 100 and 200 meters and was the anchorman on both winning 400 and 800 relay teams.
