Winston Matney of Clemmons became a national champion at the National Power Tumbling Tournament held in San Antonio, Texas. As the N.C. champion in his nine and 10-year age group, he qualified to compete against 23 other nationally qualified power tumblers in San Antonio. Matney is the son of Bronson Matney and Jackie Martin of Clemmons and is a rising fourth-grader at Marvin Ward Elementary School.

Longtime Lewisville resident Herbert “Herb” Reynolds, 86, died June 18. Reynolds and his three brothers — Galloway, Frank and Daniel — founded L.A. Reynolds Co. in 1944. Reynolds was involved in numerous local residential and commercial development projects, as well as in ventures in the mountains of North Carolina, including the town of Seven Devils, Appalachian Ski Mountain and Hawksnest Golf and Ski area. He was a founding member of the Lewisville Civic Club and the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department.

The Clemmons Garden Club met last week at Mr. and Mrs. Max Bingham’s home on High Rock Lake. The ladies prepared a meal which was enjoyed by 18 people that made the day trip. Everyone took advantage of the beautiful day and went cruising on the lake. 

Thomas and Weslyn Herman of Clemmons announced the birth of their daughter, Taylor Lynn Herman. She was born June 4 at Forsyth Medical Center. She has one sister, Brooke Herman. Paternal grandparents are Tom and Doris Herman of Clemmons. Maternal grandparents are Tom Caudle of Middlesex and Wanda Caudle of Clemmons.

It’s early in the 2001 summer swimming season, but Willow Run made a powerful statement by knocking off defending Greater Forsyth Champion Clemmons West 443-419. Ryan Reiser, a swimming standout at West Forsyth High School who competes in the boys 15-18 division, spearheaded Willow Run’s success by taking five first-place events. He won the freestyle, individual medley, distance free, breast and butterfly races. Teammate Lee Collete won the back to give the Dolphins a clean sweep of the individual 15-18 races.

Larry Stombaugh of Clemmons, the Career Center’s Teacher of the Year, took part in the annual reading and scoring of the College Board’s AP Examination in advanced placement psychology. The AP reading is one of the few settings in which academic dialogue between schools and college educators is fostered and strongly encouraged. It also draws upon the talents of some of the finest teachers and professors in the country, according to Dr. Lee Jones, the executive director.
