The Southwest Athletics 12U All-Star baseball team came home from Matthews as state champions.
SWA, which beat NWNC All-Stars 13-0 in the state championship game Monday night, breezed its way through six games, allowing just one run throughout the tournament, which came in a 15-1 opening win against East Lincoln last Friday.
SWA also posted wins against Equip Sports (10-0), North Buncombe (15-0), Waxhaw (17-0) and MARA (12-0) during their dominant run.
A three-hour rain delay before Monday’s championship game started only seemed to delay the inevitable for SWA, which will now head to regional play in Glen Allen, Virginia, in July.
In other SWA All-Star action last weekend, the 10U All-Stars came up just short in their bid for a state championship after losing in the title game Monday night.
The 8U team finished their state tournament 3-2 by posting wins against Buncombe County, China Grove and Hominy Valley before being eliminated by Wilkes County.
