Lutrelle ‘Lou’ Poole Brown

Lutrelle “Lou” Poole Brown of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, at home. Lou was born in Banks County, Georgia, and grew up in Baxley, Georgia, through high school. She attended Anderson Memorial Hospital’s school of nursing, and after graduating in 1949, she began a nursing career that spanned 45 years. In 1950, she married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Brown, a student at Clemson College. In 1956, the family moved to Wilkes County and she worked at Wilkes General Hospital, beginning in the operating room, and she worked in several other departments. She later worked in the offices of Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hubbard, and finally in school health, retiring after 19 years at the Wilkes County Health Department. She received many awards for her work in school and public health and her support of the Cancer society. She was recognized as one of the “Great 100” of North Carolina in 1989. After Bob died in 1993, Lou built a house in Lincolnton, Georgia, getting back to her Georgia roots, enjoying the “lake life” on Lake Thurmond. After several years, she moved to Lewisville to be closer to her children and closer medical care. When her health began to fail, her son and daughter-in-law built a house in Winston-Salem, and she moved in with them, where she lived until her death. Lou was very active in Wilkesboro UMC, Lincolnton UMC and Brookstown UMC, including United Methodist Women with special emphasis on missions; she made several trips to Louisiana to work with United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Hosea and Minnie Bell Poole; brothers George and Roy Poole; sisters, Bernice Evans and Ola Thomas; and her husband, Bob. She is survived by her sons, Gordon Brown (Carmen) and James Brown (Debbie); daughter, Melissa Mowery; brother, John Poole; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, at Brookstown United Methodist Church with the Rev. James T. “Chip” Webb and Rev. James F. “Jim” Patterson officiating. In keeping with her love for medicine, her body was donated to the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Theolene Beauchamp Carpenter

Theolene Beauchamp Carpenter, 86, passed away on Sept. 14, 2022. She was born in Davie County to Elmer Eugene Beauchamp and Esther Geneva Faircloth Beauchamp. Carpenter was a life-long active member of Macedonia Moravian Church serving her Lord and Savior in many areas of church life. She retired from Sara Lee Direct, now known as Hanes Brand in Winston-Salem. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Christine Walker. Surviving are her daughter, Teresa Swisher (Roy) of Statesville; and son, Tony Myers (Angie) of Advance; grandchildren, Wesley Myers of Cullowhee and Maddie Myers of Advance; sister, Patricia Fulk of Mount Airy; nieces, Melissa  Phillips (Jody), and Cindy Walker Bailey (Todd). A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, at Macedonia Moravian Church with Pastor Zach Dease officiating. Interment followed in the church graveyard. Ailene Davis Craft

Mrs. Ailene Davis Craft passed away at home on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022. She was born on April 14, 1929, in Davidson County to the late Opal Koontz Crews and Roosevelt Davis. Craft was a skilled seamstress and worked at Anchor Co. and Davis department stores. She loved music and was a talented pianist. Craft also enjoyed cooking and gardening. She loved her cats, especially Theodore. Craft was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Marion Herbert Craft and her half brother, Garland Crews. She leaves behind her children, Lynne Criner, Sandra Elliott, Michael Craft and Phillip Craft; grandchildren, Marsha, Chris, Matthew, Emily, and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Fiona, Caroline and Jack. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, at Lewisville United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Lewisville United Methodist Church at P.O. Jack Edward Dowell

Mr. Jack Edward Dowell, 89, passed away Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, at his home. He was born Feb. 13, 1933, in Yadkin County to Lloyd Dowell and Ohna Roberts Dowell. He worked as a ceramic tile installer for many years. Dowell was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Holcomb Dowell; and sisters, Frances Kiger, Hilda Binkley and Toleda Wilhelm. Surviving are his son, Eddie Dowell of Winston-Salem; a sister, Virginia Sizemore (Jerry); and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel with Rev. Jerry Sizemore officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Drew Edwards

Dr. Drew Edwards, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 20, 2022. He was born on May 15, 1944. He fell while walking in his small neighborhood and died from complications from Alzheimer’s and a brain injury. He helped so many families and children as a clinical child psychologist for 50 years and as an adjunct professor of psychology at Wake Forest University for 40 years. He was so loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a graduate of Furman University (1966), Wake Forest University (1968), Florida State University (1971) and internship from Duke University Medical Center (1972). His family will miss him so very much. His wife, Barbara Self Edwards, will cherish the 52 years of marriage they shared. His daughters, Christi Cobler, Stephanie Edwards and granddaughter Morgan Cobler were the apple of his eye. Other surviving family are Ann Loftis of Greensboro, Judy and Jerry Spivey, and Rebecca Spivey of Richmond, Virginia. A celebration of Drew’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, with a reception to follow. Betsy Ann Harper

Betsy Ann Harper, 58, passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2022, at Wake Forest Baptist Health. She was born in Forsyth County on May 20, 1964, to Bruce and Shirley H. Harper. Betsy graduated from West Forsyth High School and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She loved to cook and has always worked in food service. Betsy loved going to the beach, was a cherished friend to many and was a loving aunt. Preceding her in death was her father and a brother, Jason Harper. Surviving is her mother, Shirley H. Harper; brother, Kevin Harper; niece, Heather Cornine (Raymond); great-nieces, Emma and Abby; great-nephew, Joel; sister-in-law, Amy Harper; special friends, Karen Cox and Cindy Sisson; also surviving is her loving fur baby, “Rain.” A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel with Rev. Matthew W. Allen officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Sarah Fordham Harvey

Sarah Fordham Harvey, 86, of Bermuda Run passed away in Bishop, Georgia, on Sept. 13, 2022. Sarah was born on Jan. 29, 1936, to Charles Burt Fordham and Ophelia Conrad Fordham and spent most of her youth living on Gaston Street in Winston-Salem. A member of Calvary Moravian Church throughout her childhood, Sarah graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1954 as a National Merit Scholar and a National Honors Society member. She continued her academic studies at Salem College in Winston Salem, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1958. Sarah married James S. Harvey on April 14, 1962, at Calvary Moravian after working as a research chemist at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. After spending most of their working years in New Jersey as members of Episcopal and Lutheran churches, Sarah and James retired first to Mount Airy and then to Bermuda Village. They were fortunate to celebrate 60 years together on April 14, 2022. Sarah was a wonderful cook and an avid quilter. She enjoyed cooking for her family and was keen to explore new recipes and food preparation techniques.  In later life, she created numerous quilts, which she often gifted to family and friends. The quilts she gave to others were mementos of her love and memory that required considerable creativity and technical skill. The quality of the quilts would have been suitable in competitions, but she always avoided the limelight and never pursued doing so. She taught her granddaughters sewing techniques, and together they made “Quilts of Honor” as gifts to a soldier and a Marine. Educated as a chemist, Sarah loved to read and was a lifelong learner. Her sharp mind and memory recall made her a natural problem-solver, which she applied to many different areas during her lifetime. She enjoyed listening to classical music, which one would often hear in the background wherever she lived. On a personal level, she enjoyed playing with dogs and small children. Indeed, throughout her lifetime, she owned 10 dogs, two cats, two rabbits and a guinea pig. She also had a keen eye for details in nature, and especially enjoyed owls.  Sarah is survived by her husband, James Stephen Harvey; son, Stephen Burt Harvey; daughter-in-law, Leslie Vaden Harvey, granddaughters Rebecca Catherine Harvey and Laura Madeline Harvey, and grandson David Stephen Harvey. The family of Stephen and Leslie live in Watkinsville, Georgia. She was predeceased by her parents, as well as close family members James Fordham Jr., Norian Denny Fordham, Treva Jennings, and Beth and Charles Golden. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, at Clemmons Moravian Church in Clemmons. Charles W. Holder

Charles W. Holder, 90, of Lewisville passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022. Holder was born April 16, 1932, to the late Harvey and Clara Dull Holder. Charles served in U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from RJR Tobacco with 35 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Van W. Holder, two brothers Odell and Edward and a sister Mildred Barker. Survivors include his wife Peggy C. Holder, sister-in-law Doris Holder, nephew Donald R. Barker (Dena) and their son Craig, and a niece Cindy Holder. The family would to extend their thanks to Clemmons Village II and Mountain Valley Hospice for their care. There will be a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mountain Valley Hospice.

Jonathan Fordyce Meter

Jonathan Fordyce Meter, 75, of Clemmons passed away in Winston-Salem on Sept. 13, 2022. Born on June 6, 1947, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John William Meter and Marjorie Daw (Fordyce) Meter. He was the loving husband of Arlene (Veet) Meter, with whom he shared 50 beautiful years of marriage.

Jonathan was a graduate of Reading High School, Kutztown State College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education, and Lehigh University, where he earned a master’s degree in euducation, with an Elementary Principal Certification. He also attended Penn State University.

As a youth, Jonathan worked for his uncle, Karl Meter, at Mae’s Flower Shop and had many fond memories of playing basketball at the “Pike” playground. He taught fifth grade in the Governor Mifflin School District in Shillington, Pennsylvania, for 30 years, most of which was in 5B at GMIS. He retired in 1999.

Jonathan was very involved in his community by heading the GM Blue Jeans for Babies fundraising efforts, starting and coaching a middle school girls’ softball program at Governor Mifflin, negotiating teacher contracts, and running for Pennsylvania state representative for the 128th Legislative District.

Jonathan was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church, Shillington, Pennsylvania, for 27 years before moving to Clemmons in 2007 and becoming a member at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. Jonathan was a eucharistic minister in both churches and served as a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He always loved taking his granddaughters, Audrey and Julia, along with his son-in-law, Craig, to Holy Family’s Father-Daughter Dances.

Jonathan was a huge University of North Carolina basketball fan as well as a Penn State Football (and PSU Creamery) fan. While living in Pennsylvania, every Monday night, he looked forward to playing backgammon with his best friend, Donald Bickel.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Craig Cannon, as well as his grandchildren, Audrey, Julia and Evan Cannon of Winston-Salem; his first cousins Candace Jones Reuss and Karl Meter; sister-in-law, Linda Veet; brother-in-law, Michael Veet (Sharon); nieces, Laure Veet Garay, Lisa Perrotti, Lesli Linn; nephew, Michael Veet; best friend, Donald Bickel, as well as many other family members and friends.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. Family will receive guests at 10:30 a.m. A second mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10, 2022, at St. John Baptist de La Salle Church in Shillington, Pennsylvania, with family receiving guests at 9:30 a.m.

Karen Rae Fauber Miller

Karen Rae Fauber Miller, 74, of Clemmons and originally from Bloomingrose, W.V. died at home on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, after her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was preceded in death by her parents Dennis and Dorothy Fauber and her husband Thomas Eugene Miller.

She is survived by her children, son, Aaron Miller (Tracie); daughter, Angela Gregory (Hany); and grandchildren, Blane Miller (Hannah), Richard Gregory and Cody Miller. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank Trellis Hospice of NC (Davie Team) for their wonderful and sensitive care and amazing support.

Helen Marie Gray Peterson

Mrs. Helen Marie Gray Peterson, 96, of Clemmons, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 16, 2022. Helen was born April 28, 1926. She was the daughter of Mabel Gray Crouse and Coy Crouse. She had one sister, Gilda, who preceded her in death. From her mother, Helen gained her love for Jesus Christ. Helen met her husband, Lee C. Peterson, and they were married on Nov. 2, 1946. Soon after, they began their family, which consisted of 10 children. She always had a way of making each child feel like they were No. 1 and feel special. She always made sure her children had a loving home while sharing the love of Christ to each of them. She later was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Betsy Marie Peterson and a son-in-law, Johnny. Surviving are her children, Gary (Joan), Pam, Greg (Kathy), Mark (Andrea), Bob, David, Steve (Sydney), Brian (Claire) and Jim (April), along with 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Helen was an avid member of Calvary Baptist Church. She had a love for people, which she used in her real estate career to help young families find their perfect home. The family would like to thank her caregivers for their loving care, Roshall Binyard, Tashina Welborn, Alesha Welborn and Vaneisha Pratt, who have all become family. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. A funeral service will be held immediately following at 2:30 p.m. A private burial service will be held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.

John Arthur Redding Sr.

John Arthur Redding Sr., 92, passed away Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022. He was born Jan. 1, 1930, in Clemmons to the late David Paul Redding and Metta Roop Redding. In addition to his parents, Redding is preceded in death by loving wife of 67 years, Wanda Pegram Redding; sisters, Polly Hennings and Dot Sheetz (Joe); brothers: James D. Redding, Tommy Redding (Penny), and Marshall Redding. He is survived by his son, John Arthur Redding, Jr. (Martha); daughter, Charlotte Ann Redding; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Redding retired from a career in sales and was active in many civic and political organizations. He was elected to the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Board of Education, former chairman of the Forsyth County Republican Party, member of the Forsyth County Utilities Commission and Board of Elections, former president of Lewisville Civic Club, and former master of Winston-Salem Masonic Lodge No. 167. Redding also proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, being honorably discharged in 1951.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Lou Montgomery Utt

Mrs. Lou Montgomery Utt, 81, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022. She was born Feb. 25, 1941, in Forsyth County to the late Herbert Flay and Eunice Gibson Montgomery. Utt graduated from James A. Gray High School in 1959. Utt moved to Warner Robbins Georgia for two years before returning to Winston-Salem and eventually settling in Lewisville, where she lived for more than 50 years. She taught Sunday school at Home Moravian Church and Unity Moravian Church, where she was a charter member. After raising her children, Utt obtained her real estate license and enjoyed a career with Lambe Young and Coldwell Banker. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. The highlight of her year was always hosting a family party on Christmas Eve. Preceding her in death was her husband, Alon Utt. Surviving are a son, Andy Fansler (Kim) of Winston-Salem; daughter, Jeannie Felten (Jason) of Lewisville; grandchildren, Drew Fansler, Ty Fansler, Maddie Felten and Nathan Felten; step-children, Lisa Perryman (Daniel) and Stacy Wooten (Daniel) and their six children; also surviving is a sister, Jean M. Keith of Cocoa, Florida. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, at Unity Moravian Church with Rev. Scott Rainey officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard. The family received friends following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Unity Moravian Church, 8300 Concord Church Road, Lewisville, NC 27023.
