With the last full week before Thanksgiving break over and done with, pre-winter activities are in full swing. Along with the drop in temperature, the girls wrestling team is getting hot, with a 30-9 win over West Rowan on Nov. 17.
The girls won five of their seven matches, with Amber Summers, Cloe Medina, Ariana Merlos Bueno, Alissa Neal and Chloe Hoover all taking wins.
The Titans also wrestled Parkwood High School on Nov. 18. Along with the new girls wrestling team, West will have a boys court volleyball team for the first time this spring, yet another new addition to the Titan athletic program. West’s varsity competition cheer team, under N.C. Cheer Coach of the Year, Lori Harper, also won back-to-back regional competitions, Mountain Regional and Triangle Regional.
The Drama Department put on its fall production “Vacancy in Paradise” last week, marking their final play of the year until their spring musical “Bye Bye, Birdie” in March.
Student Rush Night, which was the final dress rehearsal and free admission for parents and drama students was held Nov. 16 and tickets were sold for $5 at the door on the production nights of Nov. 17, 18 and 19.
The play opens with the main character, Wally, stumbling upon the run-down and near-closing hotel called Paradise Glenn, run by Claire and her daughter Ellen. When Wally starts advertising the hotel as a romantic location without Claire and Ellen’s knowledge, business explodes and chaos ensues. The comedy was a huge success for the Drama Department.
With a short two-day week, we look to some post-Thanksgiving break events. The Girls Service Club is hosting its annual Blood Drive on Nov. 30. Everyone 16 and older is encouraged to give blood, with North Carolina blood donations far lower than average.
The Chorus Department’s holiday concert will be held in the Performing Arts Center on Dec. 1, featuring holiday pieces from all four chorus ensembles. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to better the Chorus Department and the Performing Arts Department as a whole.
Explore The Possibilities is also coming up on Dec. 5. The annual event invites rising ninth graders to the village to learn about different classes and club opportunities for them within the different departments. It should be a fun night for both current and future West students alike.
Looking towards the holiday season, there’s a lot to be excited for in the village.
