Ruth Evangeline Bingham
Mrs. Ruth Evangeline Bingham, 94 of Clemmons passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023. She was born Feb. 16, 1928, to the late Robert and Nettie Wright Phelps in Clemmons, where she would grow up, meet her loving husband of 67 years, Max Bingham, and spend most of her adult life. To know Ruth was to know Mother Nature. Plants, animals, family, friends — “Mama Ruth” loved and cared for them all, from the many children (not just her own) raised in her kitchen to tiny Monarch caterpillars…also raised in her kitchen. Ruth’s garden was never neat, but carefully and patiently tended. She coaxed an endless bounty from the ground around her home, which she crafted into persimmon puddings, homemade applesauce, and beautiful flower arrangements.
Ruth could make just about anything grow. She had a knack for knowing just what something (or someone) needed to flourish. Practical but gentle, endlessly and unconditionally loving, she was the perfect partner to her sweetheart Max – she matched his gentle nature and balanced his mischief with her steadiness. She led a faithful and Christ-centered life, with a true servant’s heart. Ruth is survived by her children, Jeannie Yarbrough (John), Ken Bingham (Sissy), and Sharon McGuire (Tom); grandchildren, Chad (Jessie), Rebecca and Stephen Yarbrough, Michael (Kelsey) and Timothy (Logan) Bingham, Max McGuire, and Allison (Mark) Baumgarten; and great-grandchildren Carter, Libby, David, Ruthie and Hallie. She was preceded in death by her husband Max Carter Bingham.
Ruth will be laid to rest in a private graveside service at First Christian Church cemetery. The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023, at Hayworth Miller Kinderton Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 6131 Frye Bridge Rd, Clemmons, NC 27012. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
Everett Reed Scherer
Everett Reed Scherer was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He left the world peacefully at home on Jan. 13, 2023, at the age of 88. Reed was born to Everett and Mary Ruth Scherer on Sept. 17, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was an outstanding student, attending Flaget Catholic High School in Louisville. Reed attended the University of Louisville while serving in the Navy ROTC. Later, Reed worked for Eaton Corporation where he met the love of his life, Angela Scherer. They wed in 1962 and raised a wonderful family — first in Louisville and later settling in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. Together, they raised three children: Eric, Brian and Melody Rose.
After Reed’s final retirement, he settled into Clemmons where he enjoyed tending to the flowers and birds in his garden. He took pride in his granddaughters, attending their academic and sporting events as well as musical and dance recitals. Reed was always a gentleman, provider and role model for his family. He will be dearly missed by his wife Angela as well as his children, grandchildren and extended family. May he rest in peace.
Reed is survived by his beautiful wife of over 60 years Angela; children, Frank Krentzman, Ramona Chamian, Eric Scherer (Michelle), Brian Scherer (Kerri) and Melody Rose Mitchell (Bill); grandchildren, Thomas Chamian (Jean-Claire), Sophia Rose and Ava Claire Scherer; great-grandchildren, Oscar and Monroe Chamian; sister, Ginger Baird and numerous nieces and nephews and his close companion — Rosie.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, at Holy Family Catholic Church at 4820 Kinnamon Road, Clemmons. Flowers can be sent directly to the church by Thursday, Feb. 2 by 4 p.m. or donations in Reed’s honor may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
