Happy New Year, Titans, and welcome back to campus.

With nearly a week and a half of school under our belts in 2024, there is already a great deal of activity reinvigorating the village.

West’s athletics have been hot of late, especially the boys varsity basketball team, which boasts a 10-2 overall record and hold the top spot in the Central Piedmont Conference (CPC) after defeating arch rivals, the Reagan Raiders, on Jan. 5 at home by a score of 63-56.

The Titans face their next opponent, R.J. Reynolds, on the road on Jan. 12. The girls varsity basketball team is not far behind, with an 8-3 overall record and first place in the CPC as well, with its most recent win being a 42-35 defeat of Reagan on the same night as the boys.

They too will face R.J. Reynolds on the road on Jan. 12. Both the boys and girls varsity wrestling will face off against Davie on the road for their next match as well, and the varsity swim team visits Reagan on Jan. 19 to face the Raiders as well as R.J. Reynolds, Mount Tabor, Parkland, Glenn, Davie and East Forsyth.

Along with athletics, the performing arts are back in full swing as well, with auditions for the spring musical, “Anastasia” taking place this week. “Anastasia” will be the first Broadway level show that West has attempted in current drama instructor Renae Hubbard’s twenty plus year tenure, so it’s sure to be a great performance. Save the date for March 21-23 and come see the Titans put on this beloved show.

Last school year, the village hosted its first ever winter dance for underclassmen Titans only. This year, it has become a tradition, with the second annual winter semi-formal dance set to be held on Feb. 24 from 7-10 p.m. What is different about this year is that students are now permitted to bring a date from a different school. The theme is ‘Enchanted Forest’ and tickets are on sale now for $25 to all freshmen and sophomores.

School was canceled across the district and in many other places across the state on Tuesday, Jan. 9, due to a State of Emergency called by Gov. Cooper for flash flood watches and high winds. Luckily, students were able to stay safe and dry on this extreme weather day and have a nice day of rest after the first few days back at school.
