Student representatives from each school in the Clemmons Courier’s coverage area competed in a Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools county-wide spelling bee at central office on Feb. 1.
The elementary school competitors included: Olivia Hayes, fourth grade, Clemmons Elementary; Kristopher Coons, third grade, Lewisville Elementary; Gabrielle Gilmore, fourth grade, Morgan Elementary; and Nisha Sarvasya, fourth grade, Southwest Elementary.
Two middle school students also advanced to the county level. Juliana Taylor, eighth grade of Clemmons Middle, and Emily McDonald, eighth grade, Lewisville Middle, did well to represent their schools.
Ultimately, Afton Dockery, a seventh grade student from Hanes Magnet Middle was declared the new district champion. It took almost two hours to eliminate all the spellers. Jasper Nolen, who is in fourth grade at Cash Elementary, was runner up and Max Wilson, a fifth grader at Bolton Elementary, was third.
