CLEMMONS — Members of the leadership team with TRU Taekwondo recently partnered with the village of Clemmons and Creek Week to help clean up parts of the village.

The team, which ranges in age from nine to 13, met up in the early morning on Saturday, March 16, in order to participate in the event and clean up the areas surrounding Meadowbrook Court. Approximately a dozen taekwondo students donned orange vests and picked up trash.

The clean-up crew did not consist of only teenagers, however. Parents of the students volunteered as well in order to help out and be role models by giving back their own time to their community, said Sara-Anne Averett Bell, the director of marketing and communications with the organization.

“Joining my son and our TRU family to tidy up Clemmons on Saturday morning was a memorable experience. Witnessing his pride in contributing to the community was heartwarming and being able to share that moment through his eyes was truly special,” said Kristen Butler, a parent of one of the students.

Bell said that the students’ volunteering of their time served as part of the organization’s goal to “invest, commit and build excellent leaders.”

Creek Week is a state initiative aimed at providing opportunities and resources for communities to gather and discover, clean up and help out their local bodies of water. Forsyth County’s Creek Week spanned from March 16 to March 24 and included events such as community-wide clean ups, medicine drop-offs and a rainwater harvesting workshop.
