The West Forsyth softball team moved into first place in the Central Piedmont 4-A with just this week and next week remaining in the regular season.
Brushing off the rust after having not played since March 29 because of spring break, West Forsyth traveled to Hillsborough last Monday to face Orange County in a nonconference game. West Forsyth held on and won 14-10.
The Titans scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 14-7 lead. The Panthers (10-2) answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
“You could tell we hadn’t been together in a while,” Coach Kevin Baity of West Forsyth said. “But it’s like I said, being a nonconference game and a good opponent, it was good for us. It was good to get back out there. Our bats, I mean we hit the ball really well.”
On Friday night, West Forsyth traveled to Kernersville to face Glenn (4-11, 3-6) in a conference game. West Forsyth scored five runs in the first inning and 12 more in the second to win in a rout.
“I don’t think we had any errors,” Baity said. “Meredith (Casey) pitched and pitched really well. It was nice to get back out there.”
Since Reagan (13-3, 10-2) defeated Davie County (13-5, 8-2) this past Friday West Forsyth (14-2, 8-1) moved into sole possession of first place in the conference.
“It’s for us to get that 1 seed, just in the conference tournament,” Baity said.
West Forsyth is scheduled to play at Reagan on Tuesday in a rematch of a game played March 14 in Clemmons in which Reagan won 4-1.
“I think we just hadn’t seen the pitching lately,” Baity said. “And we didn’t put a lot of balls in play against them.”
In addition to going to Reagan on Tuesday, West Forsyth is scheduled to play host to Forbush (9-7) on Wednesday in a nonconference game, and at home Friday against Davie County.
“We’ve got the toughest games down the stretch, that’s for sure,” Baity said. “But that’s the way you like it.”
Girls soccer
The West Forsyth girls soccer team just had one game last week, but they made the most out of it.
Aislynn Maguire, a junior who has committed to play at Wake Forest, scored two goals to help West Forsyth defeat East Forsyth 4-0 last Wednesday in a Central Piedmont 4-A game.
“(Maguire) is super-talented,” Williams said. “She’s committed to Wake. She’s a junior. This year, she’s had a little bit more of a different role than maybe she’s had in the past. (She) roams around from the attacking third in different spots – from the left, from the right, from the center, from deep in the midfield, she can pick up the ball.”
Milly Garcia Olmedo and Ella Fergus added the other two goals for the Titans (7-2-1, 6-0).
“We scored two (goals) early, in the first 5 or 10 minutes, and experience sort of a lull after that,” Williams said. “It’s unfortunately common if you score a couple early you sort of relax and you don’t play as well as you can, and the other team starts playing a little better.”
East Forsyth is 4-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.
This week, West Forsyth is scheduled to play at Reynolds (6-4, 3-3) on Monday in a conference game at Mount Tabor (8-3, 4-2) on Wednesday in a conference game.
It’s the first time West Forsyth has faced Reynolds this season. West Forsyth defeated Mount Tabor 6-3 on March 13 in the first meeting.
“We play some strong teams away in the second half,” Williams said. “We played them at home, so that will be even tougher.”
Girls lacrosse
The West Forsyth girls lacrosse kept rolling last week after winning all three games.
Gaby Vestal and Bailey Fox scored four goals apiece to help West Forsyth defeat Reagan 17-10 in a Central Piedmont 4-A game in Clemmons.
Alivia Gurley, Brighde Mullen and Tatum Snow added three goals apiece for the Titans (13-1, 10-0).
“Rusty. It was very, very rusty,” Coach Doug Brawley of West Forsyth said. “We came back Tuesday versus Reagan, and obviously coming off spring break having missed at least five practices, we were very rusty.”
The Raiders, as of Monday, are 9-5 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
The following night against Bishop McGuinness in a nonconference game in Clemmons, Gurley and Snow scored four goals each to help West Forsyth win 14-10, handing McGuinness its first loss.
“We played better as the week progressed, but we still have not played our best ball (last) week,” Brawley said. “It was still a little bit sloppy.”
Bishop McGuinness is now 12-1.
Last Friday in Clemmons, Vestal scored five goals to help West Forsyth upend Davie County 14-4 in a conference game.
Snow and Kayleigh Mutkus added three goals apiece.
“When you’re doing well you’re going to get everybody’s best effort,” Brawley said. “And that seemed to happen this week.”
This is the final week of the regular season. West Forsyth is scheduled to play host to Reynolds (9-3, 9-1) on Tuesday in a conference game. West Forsyth won the first meeting 15-8 on March 14, which is Reynolds’ lone conference loss.
In addition to Reynolds, West Forsyth is scheduled to travel to Cornelius on Wednesday to play Hough (5-2) in a nonconference game. The final game of the regular season is scheduled for Friday in Kernersville against East Forsyth (5-8, 4-5) in a conference game.
“If we win (against Reynolds) it give us the conference championship, which gives us the No. 1 seed for our conference going into the states,” Brawley said. “That’s been our No. 1 goal so far this year.”
Baseball
The West Forsyth baseball team rolled through last week with a nonconference win against Cornerstone Charter and a doubleheader sweep this past Friday against Parkland in a Central Piedmont 4-A series.
In the Cornerstone game last Tuesday in Clemmons, West Forsyth scored four runs in the third inning to win 11-4.
West Forsyth scored a run in the first and two more in the second inning before scoring four more in the third to take a 7-0 lead. Cornerstone (9-2) scored two runs in the fourth inning, but West Forsyth answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the in the fifth to extend the lead to 11-2.
Last Friday in Clemmons, West Forsyth swept Parkland by winning both games, which were each shortened to three innings, 17-0.
In the first game, West Forsyth scored five runs in the first, seven in the second and five more in the third. In the second game, West Forsyth scored 13 runs in the first inning and four more in the second.
The Mustangs fell to 0-12 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
This week, which is the penultimate week of the regular season, West Forsyth (13-4, 8-2) is scheduled to play host to Mount Tabor (1-9. 1-7) on Tuesday in a conference game, at Watauga on Wednesday in a nonconference game, and at Mount Tabor on Friday.
Boys lacrosse
The struggles continued this past week for the West Forsyth boys lacrosse team.
Reagan defeated West Forsyth 20-4 this past Tuesday in Pfafftown in a Central Piedmont 4-A game, and three days later, Davie County defeated West Forsyth 16-6 in a conference game in Clemmons.
Reagan improved to 9-6 overall and 8-2 in the conference, and Davie County improved to 6-7 and 5-5.
This week is the final week of the regular season. West Forsyth (0-12, 0-10) is scheduled to play host to Atkins (9-6) on Monday in a nonconference game, play host to Reynolds (11-1, 10-0) Tuesday in a conference game, and East Forsyth (10-4, 6-3) Friday in a conference game in Kernersville.
