CLEMMONS — While the summer-like weather and proximity to the end of the school year may leave some lacking motivation, campus as a whole has not slowed down in the slightest, in a push to finish these last couple of months strong and prepare for next school year. Part of this includes a trial run of the new SmartPass software in four of the buildings at West: the 700, 400 and the pods (2100 and 2200). In these buildings, instead of simply asking a teacher to use the bathroom or getting a written hall pass to go pick something up from the office or student services, students with classes in these four buildings are now using the online program as their bathroom and hall passes.

In the software, students can request a pass to different locations around school, and they are then either permitted to go on whatever timer is assigned to their pass, or put in a queue, if there are too many people already out in that given location, mainly the bathrooms. SmartPass allows teachers and administrators to keep record of which students left at which times and who was where in case of any sort of incident. Assuming the beta stage of this software implementation goes smoothly, West, along with many other schools in the WS/FCS district, plan to make SmartPass permanent all over campus.

On Thursday, 13 West choral students, chosen by audition and ranging in all different grades and voice parts, head to the mountains for the high school Western Regional choral performance, one half of the result of the split of the All-State choral performance a few years back. Students will spend all day tomorrow rehearsing their music, which they were given in advance to learn prior to the event, and perform around midday on Saturday.

Athletics have been continuing strong recently as well. The girls varsity soccer team shut out East Forsyth at home 4-0 on April 10, and started this week by securing a 2-1 road win over R.J. Reynolds. The girls also faced Mount Tabor on the road last night, and host Parkland this coming Monday for their next game. The varsity baseball team was also hot last week, securing an 11-4 home win over Cornerstone Charter on April 10, and back to back 17-0 win in their home double header with Parkland on April 12. The team started this week by hosting Mount Tabor on Tuesday and visiting Watauga yesterday, and head over to Mount Tabor for a rematch tomorrow night. While the situation for the boys varsity lacrosse team has not seen any improvement, heading into this week 0-12, and worsening the situation with an 11-4 home loss to Atkins on Monday, the girls varsity lacrosse team has continued to thrive, beating Reagan, Bishop McGuinness and Davie at home last week, 17-10, 14-10 and 14-4 respectively. The girls hosted R.J. Reynolds on Tuesday, their final home game of the season, as well as visiting Hough yesterday, and finish out the year tomorrow at East Forsyth.
