West Forsyth announces 10 new members to its hall of fame to be inducted this fall

CLEMMONS — This coming fall, West Forsyth will have some new members inducted into its athletics hall of fame.
Mike Pennington, the athletic director for the Titans, announced on Monday that 10 new members will be inducted in September. Those 10 members will be honored during the Central Piedmont 4-A game on Sept. 24 in Clemmons against Parkland. The following day, there will be a banquet at noon in Simpson Gymnasium.
The new inductees are Scott Bilton, Gray Bovender, Greg Holt, Chris Mackie, Brittany McKinney, Madeline Parra, Randy Pope, Pat Spainhour, Johnny Stoutamire and Hal Wray.
Bilton was the head boys soccer coach from 2007-14 and the head girls soccer coach from 2007-23. As the boys coach, Bilton had a record of 99-50-20 and won four conference championships from 2009-12 and was named the conference coach of the year four teams. As the girls coach, he was 260-58-21, winning 11 conference championships and was named conference coach of the year 10 times.. The girls won the NCHSAA Class 4-A championship in 2017.
In addition, Bilton was head for the NCCA East-West All-Star Game. And he was the assistant athletic director at West Forsyth from 2014-23.
Bovender played three years on the football team as a wide receiver, cornerback, punter, punt returner and kick returner, helping the team reach the NCHSAA Class 4-A semifinals in 1989 and its runner-up finish in 1990. He played in the Shrine Bowl his senior year. After graduating, he was a two-year starter at North Carolina. Bovender also played basketball and baseball, receiving all-conference honors in both in 1991.
Holt was a four-time all-conference selection in baseball from 2004-07. After graduating from West Forsyth, he played in college at North Carolina and pitched in three different College World Series. He was drafted in the eighth round by the Washington Nationals of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. He was inducted in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.
Another former baseball player going in is Mackie, who was a writer at the Clemmons Courier from 1985-2017. He was named all-conference in 1979, hitting .404 as a hitter and pitched a no-hitter against Greensboro Grimsley. He played college baseball at Western Carolina and Guilford College, and after college, he played professionally 1983 in Ogden, Utah, and he played for the Chicago Cubs organization in 1984.
McKinney was a stalwart at West Forsyth in both volleyball and softball, and she was named West Forsyth female athlete of the year in both her junior and senior years. In softball, she hit .491 as a senior and finished her career with a school-record 31 RBIs in one season and 113 in her career. As a senior catcher, she helped guide the team to a state runner-up finish. She was named all-conference all four years and was named all-state three times. She was a captain on the volleyball team. After graduating, McKinney played softball at North Carolina where she was the starting catcher.
Parra was a top swimmer on the girls team, graduating in 2005. She held school records in the 100-yard butterfly, 200 freestyle, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, and 200 medley relay. In the 2004 NCHSAA Class 4-A state championship, Parra shined in both the 2004 and 2005 NCHSAA Class 4-A championship. In addition, she was all-conference from 2002-05. She swam for four years at Davidson College.
Pope was a long-time baseball coach for the Titans. As the head coach, he was named Central Piedmont 4-A coach of the year three times and had a record of 293-107. The Titans finished runner-up in the 2002 NCHSAA Class 4-A state championship. West Forsyth, under his guidance, sent more than 80 players to play in college. He was also an assistant football coach at the school for 12 years and was named to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
Spainhour was the cheerleading coach at West Forsyth from 1974-90. She was teh North Carolina cheer coach of the year in 1988. Spainhour was a founding member and former president of the N.C. Cheerleading Coaches Association. She formed the first coed cheerleading team at West Forsyth during the 1984-85 school year. She was also the cheerleading coach at Wake Forest from 1990-2000.
Stoutamire was decorated athlete in both football and track and field at West Forsyth, winning the school’s athlete of the year in 1973-74. He was all-conference in football in 1973 and 1974. He was all CIAA for two years when he played football at Livingstone College. While there, he was named All-American in 1977-78, making him the first player in school history to be named All-American. Stoutamire, who had his number retired at West Forsyth, played for the Buffalo Bills in 1978.
Wray played soccer, wrestling, football and track and field at West Forsyth. In 1997-98 and 1998-99 he was named the school’s athlete of the year. He was all-conference in soccer, wrestling and track and field. He graduated second in his class at West Forsyth and played soccer at North Carolina. After college, he has run in several Boston Marathons and is currently and is an orthopedic surgeon in Forsyth County.
