CLEMMONS — As usual, our members were busy with many activities and volunteer efforts in April.
At our April 2 membership meeting, Club President Thao Sommerville reviewed the highlights of the board’s earlier meeting with the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce Leadership Team. The team is assisting the club with its social presence and membership growth.
At the April 16 meeting, our guest speaker was Olivia Bodescu, an exchange student from Romania. She attends R. J. Reynolds High School. She was accompanied by Kristen Hinchman, representing the Foreign Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX). FLEX is the sponsoring organization for Bodescu’s exchange. Bodescu touched on many aspects of Romanian culture, politics, and history. This included music and culinary specialties. She played audio samples of some of the traditional and modern favorite music. As is our practice a book signed by Bodescu will be presented to Smart Start in her honor.
Our West Forsyth Key Club members recently attended DCON. Fourteen students attended. They won the following awards: 1st place, Major Emphasis Project; 1st place, Single Service; 1st place, Digital Poster.
They are also a Diamond Distinguished Club for the 6th year in a row. Theresa Bryant, the Key Club sponsor, was also awarded honorary membership in Key Club International. That is a rare award chosen by the district governor.
Community Outreach Chairman Steve Danner has sent in the report to the DOT on our most recent Highway Cleanup.
Our recent acquisition, a professional popcorn machine, was well broken in, this month. At the Morgan Elementary Meals and Squeals event, members Ina Beavers, Jim Brosovic and Joel Schanker enjoyed meeting students, their families and staff while handing out free popcorn. The following week members again attended the Annual Clemmons Community Day at the Jerry Long YMCA where we shared fellowship and more free popcorn.
Club and Key Club members jointly participated in hosting the monthly Bingo Games at Trinity Elms.
Our meetings are held at the Trinity Elms Apartment Complex activity center at 7543 Fair Oaks Drive, Clemmons. Meetings begin at 8 a.m. Anyone interested is welcome to join. Coffee and breakfast items served. For more information on Kiwanis of Clemmons please contact Membership Chair Ina Beavers at thebeav1973@outloom
