The West Forsyth boys basketball team continued to win after sweeping the week’s two games to remain in first place in the Central Piedmont 4-A.
However, the boys and girls teams at West Forsyth were overshadowed by an accomplishment by senior Jacari Brim. Brim, the son of Coach Marlon Brim, earlier this season set the school record set by Chris Paul. Paul is now playing in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs.
Paul’s records were 1,632 points and 632 assists in his two seasons on the varsity. Jacari Brim, who transferred to West Forsyth after his freshman year after his father was named head coach at West Forsyth, had 1,798 points and 683 assists before Friday night’s home game against Reagan.
“It feels special for real,” Jacari Brim said. “Just praise all glory to God just showing off my hard work and dedication to the game. I feel like I put in a lot of work in time, blood, sweat and tears into this. So, I feel excited.”
There was a ceremony before the boys varsity game, in which Athletic Director Mike Pennington and Principal Ayonna Sutton-Chaplin presented Jacari Brim, who has signed to play in college at Appalachian State, with game balls in recognition of each feat.
“That means I’m on the right track,” Jacari Brim said. “I’ve just got to keep going, put my head down and keep working. So, that’s what I feel like.”
Marlon Brim was also part of the group standing in recognition of his son.
“As a dad I’m very, very proud of him,” Marlon Brim said. “He works extremely hard, so the awards that he gets is all on him. As a coach, you know, I expect a lot out of him as a leader. But also, know that he can carry us.
“But he don’t always carry that burden. He wants to share the ball. He wants his teammates to be good and score, too. So, he does a great job with that as well.”
As for the week, the West Forsyth boys basketball team upended Glenn Tuesday and Reagan Friday, with both games in Clemmons.
Jacari Brim led West Forsyth with 27 points Tuesday night as it defeated Glenn 83-64.
Jordan Tate added 16 points for the Titans.
“I thought we played well,” Marlon Brim said of the Glenn win. “It was just about us playing our style of basketball – playing defense and just playing hard for 32 minutes.”
Glenn is now 5-15 overall and 0-10 in the conference after Friday’s loss to Reynolds.
“(Glenn) fought hard til the end, but also thought we took a step down,” Marlon Brim said. “I don’t think we played our best Tuesday, but we played a step above what we should’ve been. But I just thought our expectations were a little higher.”
Despite being somewhat upset at how West Forsyth played against Glenn, the team rebounded Friday night to roll past Reagan 75-57 with the help of 26 points from Jacari Brim.
“Defensively, I think that’s our calling,” Marlon Brim said. “We’ve just got to do a better job of a couple things here and there.”
West Forsyth took a 23-18 lead after the first quarter and led 33-30 at halftime. West Forsyth went on an 8-1 run early in the third quarter to push the lead to 46-36 after Tate made two free throws.
The Titans led the Raiders (11-8, 5-5) by as many as 21 points after Jacari Brim made two free throws with 2:12 left in the fourth quarter.
“I thought the second half, we really played well,” Marlon Brim said. “I felt good, but you never – you know, a 10-point lead, 12-point lead in this league right here — you’ve got to play to the buzzer.”
Kamauri Manuel added 17 points for West Forsyth, Tate had 16, and Princeton Scott chipped in with 12.
Lincoln Jackson led Reagan with 20 points, Jayden McCrae had 11, and KJ Ford scored 10.
It was also West Forsyth’s third win against Reagan this season – two games in the regular season and once in the semifinals of the Atrium Health Wake Forest Bracket of the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic in December.
“We played well in the first half,” Marlon Brim said. “I thought our defense really turned up and it made the difference in the game.”
With just two weeks left and four games in regular season, West Forsyth (18-2, 9-1) is scheduled to play Tuesday night at Davie County (13-6, 6-4).
West Forsyth defeated Davie County 54-49 on Jan. 8 in Clemmons.
“We just talk about one game at a time,” Marlon Brim said. “We don’t look past anybody. We just concentrate on the next opponent when we get ready for that game.”
West Forsyth is also scheduled to play at Reynolds (6-13, 3-7) on Friday. West Forsyth defeated Reynolds 76-53 on Jan. 9 in Clemmons.
“Reynolds is going to be tough,” Marlon Brim said. “It’s going to be on the road. And (Coach Mike) Russell (of Reynolds) is going to have those guys ready. But I think overall, I think we’ll be ready for the challenge for both days.”
As for the West Forsyth girls, they had an up-and-down week. They defeated winless Glenn this past Tuesday in Clemmons, but they lost to Reagan Friday night.
Isabel Gil led West Forsyth with 20 points as it routed Glenn 67-7.
“It’s hard to get a good, hard true assessment right now,” Coach Johnathan Gainey said. “Unfortunately, Glenn is really down. So, we were out there just trying to play within ourselves, trying to execute. And we did OK.”
Glenn is now 0-16 and 0-10 after losing to Reynolds this past Friday night.
This past Friday night, Reagan came to Clemmons and edged West Forsyth 44-40.
Reagan, which defeated West Forsyth 61-34 on Jan. 3 in Pfafftown, was led by 14 points from Kayla George.
Kaylee Fox of Reagan hit a baseline jumper with 5:31 left in the third quarter to extend the lead to 37-30.
“We just try to keep on playing,” Gainey said. “If we get a stop, get a good shot, you know, we have to live with it. I think sometimes, I think we cut it down to five one time, I think we took two tough shots. We probably could’ve had better shots, but we have to live with it.”
Brooklynn King led the Titans with 13 points.
The West Forsyth girls (10-9, 4-6) are scheduled to play three games this week – conference games on Tuesday and Friday against Davie County (13-6, 8-2) and Reynolds (5-12, 3-7), respectively, as well as a home nonconference game scheduled for Saturday against Bishop McGuinness (16-0).
Davie County routed West Forsyth 86-28 on Jan. 8 in Clemmons.
“Every game is a new game,” Gainey said. “It’s just like last (Tuesday against Glenn). We’ve got to get it behind us and we come in tonight, we played Reagan. So, we can’t take anything for granted.”
Reynolds (5-12, 3-7) defeated West Forsyth 58-52 on Jan. 9 in Clemmons.
“Again, Davie is right there in front of us and I really don’t want to look past them,” Gainey said. “But to answer your question, it’s an opportunity to go to their place. It’s just like going to Davie and hopefully we’re going to win on the road.”
And with just two weeks remaining in the regular season, West Forsyth has a nonconference game with Bishop McGuinness sandwiched in the middle on Saturday at Simpson Gymnasium. Bishop McGuinness, which has won 11 NCHSAA Class 1-A championships with Coach Brian Robinson, is led by senior Adelaide Jernigan, who has signed to play at N.C. State.
“It don’t get any easier, but that’s what I signed up for,” Gainey said.
