What was happening this week in 1980 — Eight area youngsters were recognized for their efforts in raising funds for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The St. Judes Bike-A-Thon was held at Gravely Inc. parking lot in Clemmons. The participants were Keith Cooper, Jeff Rhoades, Chris Davis, Jimmy Willis, Clif Ogburn, Tim Dillard and Charles Bower.

The Kiwanis Club elected its officers for the next year at their recent meeting. They were Carroll Hickman, past president; Paul Mathews, board member; Neil Bolick, board member; Richard Helton, secretary; Rich Velluci, vice president; Don Masura, president; and Richard L. Powder, who was lieutenant governor for the 5th District.

Mr. and Mrs. Randy Thomas Warner, of Clemmons, announced the birth of their second child, a son, David Thomas Warner. The Warners are also the parents of Sabrina Rose, 8.

Coyt and Virginia Meadows of Clemmons and three sons, Eddie, Bill and Mike, returned from a fishing trip to Emerald Isle with a tremendous catch.  They caught more than 200 spots and flounder from the Indian Beach Pier and then went to Cape Lookout where they caught more than 200 pounds of drum, trout, flounder and blues.

The students in five second-grade classes at Southwest Elementary School brought canned vegetables and meats to school with them, mixed them all together in a large kettle and served up vegetable beef stew for a Thanksgiving lunch. Nancy Robinson was in charge of the project.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bishop Vaughn, of Lewisville, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Lewisville Community Center. Hosts for the reception were their children. They are Donnie and Pat Vaughn of Pfafftown, Harold Vaughn of Lewisville, Harry Vaughn of Winston-Salem, Brenda Vaughn of Midway, Mike Vaughn of Clemmons and Eddie Vaughn of Zephyr Hills, Florida.

The Lewisville PTA held its second meeting of the school year with the program being provided by grades 2-5 under the direction of Mrs. Betty Agee. The musical skit was entitled “It’s November.”
