Vivian Reece Binkley

Ms. Vivian Reece Binkley, 71, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at her residence. She was born in Forsyth County to the late Cranford Marion Reece and Gladys Hobson Reece on Feb. 1, 1950. Binkley was very athletic, and she played sports all through high school. Sports was a big part in her life, even as an adult she loved playing golf and being outside. Binkley always worked and mostly worked two jobs throughout her life. She worked as a branch manager for First Union Bank in Lewisville for many years, along with working for the Department of Social Services as a social worker. In her spare time, she loved cooking, travel and being with her family. She is survived by her two sons, Scott Binkley (Emily) and Adam Binkley; grandchildren, Austin, Breece, Miranda and Rhenna; sisters, Wanda Hamm, Sophia Reece and Julie Denton; brother, Jerry Reece. Graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2021, at West Bend Baptist Church Cemetery, with Dr. Jennings O’Neil officiating. Elta Jeanette Franklin

Elta Jeanette Franklin died on Sunday, March 14, 2021. She was born on Sept. 14, 1933, in her parents’ home on Porters Mountain outside of Montvale, Virginia. Franklin was reared in the Christian home of Robert Otey and Lura Franklin and grew up on a farm along with her two older brothers, Ray Otey (fondly called Junior) and James. She was taught about the Lord and trusted Christ as her savior as a child.

After finishing high school, she worked about two years to save some money to go to college. Franklin went to Piedmont Bible College (now Carolina University). Shortly after arriving, she met Fredrick Haynes Moore. They immediately began dating and were married the following summer on July 16, 1955. Ten months later, their son, Jerry Fredrick Moore, was born and 14 months following that, their daughter, Janet Elizabeth Moore, was born.

After Haynes graduated from Piedmont, they began serving the Lord full time with Youth for Christ in Beloit, Wisconsin. More than three years later, they were offered a position with Youth for Christ in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they served for about four years. The lives of many young people in the Youth for Christ clubs and through the ministry to juvenile delinquents were touched, impacted, led to the Lord, and transformed as the result of how God used them through his calling on their lives.

Doors were opened that led to a youth pastorate in Pontiac, Michigan, later as a youth pastor in Springfield, Missouri, and at Salem Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, as interim and later assistant youth pastor.

The church where they were serving owned Merriwood Christian Camp and the senior pastor offered Haynes and Jeanette the position as full time camp director. They served there for 16 years.

At Salem Baptist Church, in addition to assisting her husband in the youth ministry, at the camp, and the Rescue Mission, Franklin also substituted at Salem Baptist Day School. She later became the full-time librarian and partially retired after 25 years of service at the school. She then served for one more year as music teacher and librarian at Immanuel Christian School. Then she retired full time. She continued assisting Haynes at the Rescue Mission where she played the piano and provided special music when he conducted a weekly evening service at the Mission.

At every church at which they were members through the years, and now at Temple Baptist Church, where they have been attending since 1991, Franklin has always served in the choir. She also loved working in AWANA club, teaching Sunday school, and working in vacation Bible school.

About 26 years ago, Franklin was found to have pulmonary fibrosis and bronchiectasis, resulting from having had pneumonia several decades prior. She was on oxygen for about seven years. The family praises the Lord for allowing Franklin to have additional years after dealing with heart issues.

On Feb. 25, she tested positive for COVID-19 and was immediately hospitalized because of its effect on her oxygen level. She passed peacefully in her sleep when her heart gave out on Sunday, March 14, at 8:20 p.m.

Franklin is survived by F. Haynes Moore, her husband of almost 66 years, son Jerry Moore (Kay), daughter Janet Moore Zaal (Ron), grandson Ethan Moore, step-grandsons Jeremy and Chris Long, Bobby Zaal (Alissa), Johnny Zaal (Christian), and step-great grandchildren Kaylie, Reagan, Jack, Maddy, and Ellie Zaal. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Marcheta Franklin and Joyce Franklin, eight nephews, two nieces, and multiple great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Otey and Lura Franklin, brothers Junior and James Franklin, and one sister-in-law Maria Franklin.

Visitation was held from 11-11:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2021, at Temple Baptist Church in Lewisville. Graveside service was conducted at noon at the Temple Baptist Church cemetery. Martha Ann Robertson Harris

Mrs. Martha Ann Robertson Harris, 72, of Advance, passed away Monday, March 15, 2021, at her home. She was born Jan. 9, 1949, in Forsyth County to the late Johnnie Henry Robertson and Frances Williams Robertson. Harris attended Davie County High School and was a member of Advance United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, George Harris, of the home; one brother-in-law, Jay Harris (Dianne); one sister-in-law, Karen Swicegood (Dale) and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2021, at Advance United Methodist Church Cemetery by Rev. Larry Thompson. The family will receive friends following the service. Jane Vaught Hayes

Sarah Jane Vaught Hayes, 85, of Mocksville, passed away on March 15, 2021. Hayes was born in Forsyth County to the late George F. (Shorty) Vaught and Mildred Holleman Vaught Austin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Butchie Vaught.

Hayes is survived by her husband, Kenneth W. Hayes; son, Jeffrey T. Chambers; granddaughter, Brittany Skopek (Sean); sisters, Marie Widenhouse, Nancy Brown and Frankie Teague; stepsons, Michael Hayes (Rhonda) and Gary Hayes (Kimberly); as well as several nieces and nephews.

Hayes graduated from Clemmons High School. She enjoyed dancing and was a very talented artist, seamstress and cook. She was an entrepreneur who loved all pretty things which led to her last adventure as owner of “Janie’s Consign-It” in Clemmons.

Growing up, Hayes was a member of Clemmons Baptist Church. She later joined Calvary Baptist Church and Center Grove Baptist Church, worshiping regularly until her health failed.

The family would like to thank the staff at Clemmons Village I, as well as Mountain Valley Hospice, for their care and assistance. A private family service will be held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel.

Nelva Ann Ketner Hicks

Mrs. Nelva Ann Ketner Hicks, 80, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Forsyth County on July 7, 1940, to the late Fred and Cecil Dorse Ketner. Hicks worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for a few years and later became a full-time mother when her loving daughter, Dana, was born. She was a member of Harmony Grove United Methodist Church where she faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher for children for many years. Hicks enjoyed cooking and was one to always put others first. She was a loving wife to Charlie who preceded her in death along with her daughter, Dana Hicks. Surviving is her brother, Kenneth Ketner (Yvonne) and a brother-in-law, C.G. Hicks (Allison). A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 19, 2021, at Harmony Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Randy Perdue and Rev. Ken Eller officiating. Harold Sidney ‘Sid’ Jones

Harold Sidney “Sid” Jones, 92, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2021, at his home. He was born in Forsyth County on Jan. 3, 1929, to the late Pleasant and Lillie Jones. Jones worked for many years at Joe’s Landscaping. He was an ordained minister and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he also cleaned for the church daycare. Preceding him in death was his wife, Ruby Jones; son, Timothy Jones and a brother, Frank Jones. Surviving is a grandson, Dustin Jones; daughter, Della Jones; two granddaughters, Mikayla Jones and Danielle Jones; two great-grandchildren, Skyler and Lillian; and a sister, Dorothy Myers. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2021, at Immanuel Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Jonathan Smith and Pastor L.C. Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends at the graveside. Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel is serving the Jones family.

Glade ‘Jeff’ Jefferson Laws Jr.

Glade “Jeff” Jefferson Laws, Jr., 71, of Advance, passed away on Friday, March 12, 2021. Laws was a loving husband, grandfather, brother and friend to many. Laws was known for his quick wit, infectious smile, and his kind, compassionate spirit. He was born on April 27, 1949, in Hillsborough to Glade and Argie Laws. He was a graduate of Orange High School and received his accounting degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.  Laws was then drafted to the National Guard in 1972 and remained active duty for six years. He was destined to have a fulfilling career in finance, as he was organized, practical and logical. He started as a CPA with D.E. Gatewood & Company in Winston-Salem and spent most of his career as a CFO for Microfibres Inc. He retired from Air Flow Inc. in 2019 at the age of 70. Laws married the love of his life, Cathy Carroll, on Aug. 30, 1969. They shared a life together, side by side, for more than 51 years. They raised two sons, Jeff and Jon. Laws and his two sons share the same passion for music. He played drums in his high school band and was also known to sing a tune or two. If the boys were not playing or listening to music, you could find them on the ball field or court. Not only was Laws a coach to his boys’ basketball and baseball teams when they were young, but he also remained coaching and guiding them through life by giving them sound advice and encouragement. Laws will always hold a special place in his granddaughter Mia Gabrielle Laws’ heart, and they had a relationship full of laughter and love.  Laws will be deeply missed by many who will forever miss hearing his stories, seeing him smile, or feeling the warmth of his love. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Carroll Laws; sons Jeff (Christine) and Jon (Danielle); granddaughter, Mia Gabrielle Laws; sisters Marilyn Hackney and Janet Simmons (Jeff); and in-laws, Dan and Marie Minnis and Larry and Karen Carroll. An outdoor memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2021, at Clemmons Moravian Church, 3535 Spangenberg Avenue, Clemmons, NC 27012. John Isaac Mabe

Mr. John Isaac Mabe, 82, of Clemmons, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021. He was born in Surry County on July 29, 1938, to the late Ruth and Alonzo Mabe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Pansy Jones, and brother, Albert Mabe. He is survived by his high school sweetheart of nearly 60 years, wife, Polly Wilhelm Mabe; daughter, Fonda Ormond (David); grandchildren, Abbie Kinnison (Brad) and Isaac Ormond (Cecilia); great-grandsons; Charlie and Samuel Ormond; sister, Emma Winters; and several nieces and nephews. After graduating high school, Mabe did an apprenticeship with Forsyth Technical Community College. He proudly served his country in the N.C. Army National Guard. After 35 years of service, he retired from the City of Winston-Salem. Mabe was a faithful member of Calvary Church and Truth Worth Teaching Bible Class. He had a God given gift of service to others. Mr. Robert Lee McCarn

Mr. Robert Lee McCarn, 79, passed away Monday, March 15, 2021. He was born in Davidson County on Sept. 21, 1941, to the late George and Clara Boswell McCarn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers George, Jim and Ben McCarn, as well as sisters Rose Hitt and Betty Edwards. McCarn is survived by his wife, Stella McCarn; daughter, Tara McCarn; sister-in-law, Reba McCarn; and several nieces and nephews. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2021, at Green Meadows Baptist Church in Mocksville, with Pastor Josh Greene officiating. Family received friends following the service.
