Couriering this area this week in 1990 — 31 years ago: Jerry Smith, owner of Durastill of Clemmons, has presented a painting to the White House.  The painting, “Blue Ridge Water Wagon,” depicts an old water wagon in a mountain setting. Commissioned by Smith, the artist is Richard Hedgecock of Kernersville. Smith said he has been invited to formally present the painting to President Bush.

Frank and Ruth Hire of Lewisville-Clemmons Road celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past weekend with a dinner hosted by their children, their spouses and grandchildren. The hosts were Jim and Shirley Hire and son Brandon of Clemmons; Emily Speaks and daughter Abbey of Richmond, Virginia; and son Matt Wall of Advance; Ann and Almon Carr of Morganton. Another son, David and grandson, Chris, reside in Sydney, Australia.

Richard H. Cox III has been commissioned a second lieutenant through the Air Force ROTC program and earned a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Cox is the son of Richard H. and Diana P. Cox of Clemmons. He graduated in 1986 from West Forsyth High School.

The Clemmons Appearance Committee has awarded its appearance flag to the first recipient Burger King on Lewisville-Clemmons Road. The commission voted to award the flag to the local business that has the most attractive landscaping with plants, flowers and neat appearance. Bill Edwards, chairman of the Appearance Commission, complimented Burger King on its overall appearance and made the presentation last week.

Two Clemmons residents have been elected officers of the Forsyth Heart Association-Edwin L. Robbins and Sheryll B. Strode. Robins was elected chairman and Strode, secretary. Strode was also named a Volunteer of the Year for 1989-90.

The Giants bounced back from a loss early in the week to capture the double-elimination tournament in the recent Southwest Forsyth senior division baseball action. After dropping a game to the Angels in one of the early rounds, the Giants rebounded with a two game sweep of the regular season champs by the scores of 11-2 and 10-8. In the opener, Eddie Fergus turned in a masterful pitching performance to key the Giants win. Joey Douglas took the hill in the second game and his pitching along with a strong hitting attack, gave the Giants the tournament title.

Angie Shore Llewellyn graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of West Florida with a B.A. degree in philosophy. Llewellyn is the daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Llewellyn of Lewisville.

Just when we were beginning to get the feel of New York City, the bridge reopens. No longer do motorists have to take a number and get in line on Lewisville-Clemmons Road. Traffic speeds are back up in the 50s. And rear-end collisions are down drastically. The only winners of the three weeks without the U.S 158 bridge: the body shops.

Donald Heck of Clemmons has been chosen out of 97 applicants nationwide for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute-National Institute of Health Research Scholars Program at Duke University. He is a student in the university’s School of Medicine.
