The Clemmons Historical Society heard a presentation on Scouting in the area at the last meeting and Boy Scout Troop 736 took part in that program. The troop began the meeting with the presentation of colors and led with the pledge of allegiance. Club president Janet Banzhof noted that the Boy Scouts of America incorporated in 1910 and was chartered by Congress in 1916. She said that the first troop in Clemmons was chartered in 1926 and was sponsored by the community. “Clemmons only had a population of 250 people at that time, and the first Scoutmaster was W.A. Hunter Sr.” In 1958 the Clemmons Civic Club took over sponsorship of the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, and an active troop is still ongoing.

First through fifth graders at Clemmons United Methodist Church spent their Sunday School hour last week at the first annual Kids Crop Walk. Patterned after the adult Crop Walk, children obtained sponsor donations for completing the course marked off around the church grounds. Each class wore team colors and decorated banners to carry as they walked the course. Laura Vance, children’s mission coordinator, said this was just one of the projects sponsored by the Children’s Council this year.

Anthony Santago and Amy Strohschein led the West Forsyth cross country teams to conference wins in local prep competition. In the boys race, Santago’s second place finish helped the Titans beat North Davidson and Davie County. Santago’s time was 18:05. Supporting Santago were Chris Lathinghouse (fourth overall), Zach Abernathy (fifth), Hudson Blair (sixth), Eddie Willauer (eighth) and Phillip Weisner (ninth). Strohschein completed the West course in 21:41 to place second overall and guide the Lady Titans to first place. Kelly McGary added to the win with a third-place finish.

Several local students were among those completing the Adult High School Diploma and the General Education Development programs at Davidson Community College during the 2001 Summer Session. Adult High School Diploma graduates are Kim Jason of Clemmons and Nicholas Este Armstrong and Lori B. Diehl of Lewisville. General Education Development graduates are Doug O. Shaw of Clemmons and Justin W. Simmons of Lewisville.

Cynthia Howell is celebrating 25 years with First Citizens Bank in Clemmons. She is assistant vice president and financial services manager in the First Citizens office located at 2554 Lewisville-Clemmons Road. Howell is also a member of the Clemmons Kiwanis Club.

Three drives, seven plays, 21 points. West Forsyth’s long-awaited eruption finally took place in the first 15 minutes of play last Friday night. Just slightly after one period of action, the Titans owned a 21-0 lead on the strength of three straight scoring drives. None of them lasted more than four plays. Desperately in need of a victory, the Titans cranked out 54 points and pounded a hosting East Forsyth team that was snakebitten from the outset. Eagle turnovers and miscues helped West post 14 points in the first quarter and 21 more in the second as the Titans built and insurmountable 35-0 lead before the half.
