Sherry Cheek Boyles

Mrs. Sherry Cheek Boyles, 65, passed away on Friday, Oct. 22, 2021. She was born in Surry County on Oct. 23, 1955, to Bobby Clinton Cheek and Myrtle Macemore Cheek. Boyles was a member of Lewisville United Methodist Church. She was a huge supporter of Southwest Forsyth Little League, where her sons played baseball. She never missed a game, and she came to make so many friends during David and Adam’s years of playing baseball. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Boyles. Surviving family includes her sons, David Boyles (Lauren) and Adam Boyles (Laura); grandchildren, Kinley and Brooks Boyles; brother, Jeff Cheek (Deb); and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Dr. Paul Mullen officiating. Lillian Marie Pettyjohn Fesperman

Lillian Marie Pettyjohn Fesperman passed from this earth to join her heavenly father on Oct. 23, 2021. Fesperman was born on April 5, 1934, to Mr. and Mrs. John J. Pettyjohn in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, William DeBerry “Dub” Fesperman; parents John Pettyjohn and Dovie Barker; brothers JV Pettyjohn, Glenn Pettyjohn, Fred Pettyjohn; special stepbrothers Wally Lewis, Wayne Lewis, and stepmother Rachel Lewis Pettyjohn. Surviving are her daughters Sandra Fesperman Honeycutt, Anne Fesperman Foster (Garry), grandsons Joshua Honeycutt (Lisa), Sam, Will and Clayton Foster. A special stepbrother, Scott Lewis. Fesperman, a 1952 graduate of Gray High School, married her high school sweetheart, Dub Fesperman, in 1953 and moved to Durham where Dub attended Duke University. The family moved several times due to Dub’s coaching and football scouting career. Frequent moves presented new cultures, homes and churches. Priority was placed on finding a church home so the children would be able to continue in their understanding the value of knowing Jesus Christ and the application of principles of faith in their lives. Fesperman believed that God guided the family to churches where there was growth in Bible studies and which also provided friendships lasting a lifetime. Throughout the years, Fesperman was active in church as a deacon; teacher of teens and older adults; serving on various committees as well as active in missions. It was her desire to learn the value of God’s spiritual riches that could never decay or be stolen. The truths of forgiveness, mercy, love, righteousness and prayer were essential in how she lived her life. She credits her mother for setting an example as a Christian, listening to her pray aloud each night while kneeling by a kitchen chair. Additionally, the Sunday school teachers in the early years at Southside Baptist Church played an essential part in Marie’s coming to know the Lord. She was baptized at 11 years of age. Love for helping others was demonstrated throughout her life.

For a number of years, Fesperman was employed by W-S Goodwill Industries as director of human resources, and as a case manager for people with physical and intellectual disadvantages. She felt working there was an extension of her faith. While living in Moore County, Fesperman was president of the Moore Republican Women. She also served on the state level of the Republican party on the central and executive committees. A highlight was being invited and attending the 54th Inauguration of George Bush’s presidential inauguration. Fesperman loved china painting, as well as writing short stories and poetry. She wrote about her growing up years, family life, Dub’s coaching/scouting career, their many moves and experiences during the years — many of which brought laughter to the family. Her family is thankful she is now completely healed from Alzheimer’s and is resting in the arms of Jesus. A private family service will be conducted at a later date. Carolyn B. Harrell

Carolyn B. Harrell crossed over and officially became a strong alto in the heavenly choir upon her passing at home on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021. She was born on Feb. 16, 1931, to the late Rev. R.J. Bryant and Virginia Hilliard Bryant. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother to her nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 10.5 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many others whom she adopted into her family “by heart.” Her beautiful smile and bubbly personality were cherished by all and will not soon be forgotten. Her strong faith and joyful spirit bubbled up from the love of her savior and Lord, and overflowed to many through her musical talents, her teaching, and her radiant smile. She was a member of Robinhood Road Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher to the Lydia Class, sang in the choir and played accompaniment on the piano and organ.

She graduated from Mineral Springs High School and recently attended her 70th reunion. Harrell retired from the N.C. Baptist Hospital in 1992 with more than 25 years of service as secretary to the director of the department of chaplaincy. During those years, she assisted many applicants through the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program and later worked part-time at the CareNet Counseling Center. Harrell is survived by her children, James Clark Monson (Sarah) of Sanford, Kenneth Scott Monson (Julia) of Cedar Hills, Missouri, and Linda Kaye Monson Lunsford (Sam) of Lewisville.  Two services will be held to accommodate friends and family preferences due to COVID restrictions: On Thursday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m., a memorial service was held at Robinhood Road Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, and a graveside service was held at the Lewisville Baptist Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 22. The Rev. John Hackworth officiated. Family greeted friends following both services. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Robinhood Road Baptist Church Music Ministry. The family wishes to honor and thank the caregivers from Trellis Supportive Care and ComForCare Home Care for their kindness, skill and compassion demonstrated.

Annie Smith Howell

Annie Smith Howell has gone to be with her Lord and savior. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. Howell was born on Feb. 23, 1935, to John Odell and Mildred Allen Smith. She retired from Hanes, after many years of service. She enjoyed traveling, working in her yard, cooking, crocheting, spending time with her daughter and her special dog Heidi. Howell was eager to lend a helping hand and was happiest when helping others. She was a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church and loved attending church as long as her health permitted. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, Lee Roy Howell; brothers, Odell Glenn and Harold Wayne Sr.; sisters, Nancy and Flora Mae; sister-in-law Peggy; brothers-in-law Roger and Thurmond; and nephew Dale. Left to cherish her memory are her only child, daughter, Judy Marshall (Grey); brother, Willie Gray; sister-in-law, Elaine, several nieces and nephews; and aunts Dorothy and Frances. Special thanks to Dr. Franklin Tolbert and Well Care Hospice for the excellent care provided to Howell. The family would like to thank everyone who prayed, sent cards, and called during Howell’s illness. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Ronnie Craddock. Howell will lie in state from noon to 1:45 p.m. at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church prior to the graveside service. Robert ‘Bob’ Lee Whitley

Mr. Robert “Bob” Lee Whitley, 83, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021. He was born March 7, 1938, in Forsyth County to Hoyt Lee Whitley and Frankie Russell Whitley. Whitley served in the National Guard and was a former member of South Fork Baptist Church. He later became a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Whitley enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf, wood working and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Carole Finlayson Whitley in 2002; and a sister, Colene Ziglar in 2020. Surviving are his wife of 16 years, Ann Hayes Whitley; daughters, Lisa Hedgecock (Zane) and Ann “Missy” Adams (Jeff); grandchildren, Daniel Hedgecock, Caroline Clark, Andrew, Mallory and Matthew Adams; great-grandchildren, Weldon and Trigg Hedgecock; stepchildren, Teresa Smith (Steve), Jeff Smith (Lynn), Beth DeHart and Dawn Myers (Vince); eight step-grandchildren and 11 step-great grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Whitley will lie in state from noon-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2021, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Rev. Ronnie Craddock officiating.
