Roy Steven Adams

Mr. Roy Steven Adams, 70 of Advance passed away Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021. He was born Dec. 8, 1951, in Wilkes County to the late Roy Calvin Adams and Marion Stone Adams. Adams graduated from Appalachian State University with degrees in biology and geology, as well as completing military training programs at the Army command Staff College. Adams was a Vietnam veteran and retired as a colonel from the U.S. Army after 33 years of service in the U.S. Navy and Army. After retiring, Adams ran the E Link Program at Davidson County Community College for 10 years. He was an Eagle Scout and member of Advance Masonic Lodge, York Rite Bodies of North Carolina, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Association. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Beverly H. Adams of the home; sons, Zachary Adams and Aaron Adams both of Advance and brother, Rick Adams, of Hamptead. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel by Rev. Francis Smith. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Humane Society of Davie County. Terrill Lynn Bowman

Mr. Terrill Lynn Bowman, 83 of Clemmons passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021, at his home. He was born June 7, 1938, in Walker County, Georgia, to the late Albert Etheridge Bowman and Vivian Rogers Bowman. Bowman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and had retired from American Tobacco after 34 years of service. He was a devout Christian and lifelong deacon and music director to many churches. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Kay Frances Bowman, one son and one daughter. Surviving is his wife, Trish Patrick; daughter, Sheri Bowman Allen (Bobby); brother-in-law, Mike Smith; two nephews and two nieces and a family friend that Bowman thought of as a son, Scott Griffin. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, at Waughtown Cemetery. The family received friends from noon-1 p.m. prior to the graveside service at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. James ‘Jamie’ Johnson Furches Jr.

James “Jamie” Johnson Furches Jr., cherished dad, brother, husband, ex-husband, grandpa, uncle and friend, unexpectedly passed away Dec. 18, 2021, due to heart complications. He was born Feb. 8, 1962, in Forsyth County to Navy pilot and real estate investor Jim Furches and gospel singer and homemaker Colleen Maynard Furches; older brother to Mindy and Kathy. He always loved playing with toy cars and ultimately turned that interest into a hobby, then a career as an auto-body repairman, with one custom-built Camaro project ending up on the cover of Hot Rod magazine.  As a young man, he briefly co-owned his own auto-body shop, and always had a home garage for big and small jobs. He worked for 18 years at Amp Inc./Tyco as a designer, and spent these recent years working for Flow Luxury Auto-body with a boss he admired and appreciated. It wasn’t easy to be a young father but he worked hard to provide for his family and told his daughters many times how happy and proud he was to be a dad. He had the biggest heart, was full of empathy, love and compassion, had a beautiful smile and was a total goofball. He played guitar, had a wonderful singing voice, and was a big lover of music, going out to see his favorite musicians play as often as he could. He loved to play golf and especially looked forward to his annual trip to Pinehurst with his old friend Darrel Lemler. He was happiest out on the water, and could be found many summer weekends out on his boat at Lake Hickory.

Furches is survived by two daughters from his first wife, Pamela Massengill Howerton: Jennifer Coppola (Roman) and Amanda Herring (Marcus); daughter from his second wife, Elizabeth Herrin Furches: Cheyenne Roybal (Daniel Sanchez); his grandchildren Pascale, Marcello and Alessandro Coppola and Keats Herring; sister Mindy Santiago (Andy); mother Colleen Furches and many nieces and nephews. Furches had so many miraculous stories of heroism, which he was always very humble about: saving a woman from seizure on the side of the road, a man from choking at the office, a child from drowning at the lake. With every passing day, he became a more beautiful version of himself, and every day spent with him will be treasured forever. He was a good man, and will be profoundly missed. There will be a memorial service held in his honor at a future date with information posted to his Facebook page.

Karl Edward McFrederick

Mr. Karl Edward McFrederick, 58, of Advance, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021. McFrederick was born in Portage County, Ohio, on March 20, 1963. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. McFrederick was a chef for many years, spending most of his career at Akron University in Akron, Ohio. In his later years, McFrederick worked at Horn’s Truck Stop in Mocksville. He was a kind and gentle soul and always willing to help anyone out, especially the less fortunate. McFrederick was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Knight McFrederick; sister, Christina Lynn James; and brother, Mark McFrederick. He is survived by his children, Samantha McFrederick (Mark) and Kyle McFrederick; father, Charles “Charlie” Edward McFrederick; sisters, Senya Grubbs (Ronnie), Sabrina Smith (Keith), Heather Smith (Ronnie), and Darlene Rodgers (Jeff); brother, Robert McFrederick (Michelle); and wife, Shelly Monroe McFrederick. A service to celebrate McFrederick’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Forsyth Humane Society, 4881 Country Club Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

Phoebe Messick Smith

Mrs. Phoebe Messick Smith, 83, of Clemmons passed away at home on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021. She was born on Aug. 11, 1938, in Davie County to the late Glenn and Willie Mae Messick. Smith loved to bake crispy oat cookies, pound cakes and pies and give to all her friends in the community, and was known as the Cookie Lady. Smith also loved listening to bluegrass music at The Farmington Community Center and at Bojangles. Smith owned a house-cleaning business and had many clients, as well as friends that loved her from many states. She never met a stranger. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Gray Smith; sister, Patsy Phillips; and brother, Donnie Messick. She is survived by her daughter Lynn Finney (Tony) of South Carolina, sons, Perry Laird of Mocksville, and Terry Laird (Lisa) of Sparta; two grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters; Jean Marler of East Bend, and Joann Day of Virginia; and brothers, Dickie Messick (Fran) of Winston-Salem and Bo Messick (Debbie) of East Bend. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Pastor LC Taylor officiating. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 27, 2021, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Elsie Brown Hoots

Mrs. Elsie Brown Hoots, 82, of the Enon Community went peacefully to be with her heavenly father with her family by her side on Dec. 22, 2021, at her home. She was born June 3, 1939, in Stokes County to the late John W. and Charity Marshall Brown. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church where she was very active until she could no longer attend. She loved doing VBS in ministry and the funeral meal ministry. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after 37 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband of 47 years, Allen R. Hoots; six brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are her children, John Allen Hoots (Krista) of Texas, and Jane Hoots Johnson (Bryan); grandchildren, Mark Ray Johnson, Jr., John Michael Hoots (Kayce), Anthony Hoots, Katlyn Johnson, John William Johnson (Houston), and Charlie Johnson (Mary); her favorite sister, Virginia Malcolm; and sister, Nellie Thomas. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021, at Enon Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Elmore officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to WellCare Hospice in Advance. The family would like to give a special thanks to Kathleen O’Brien and Robin Caudle from hospice for the wonderful care they provided in her final days.
