When the Triad Honor Flight takes off from Piedmont Triad Airport on April 27, there will be quite a collection of heroes on board. Almost 100, to be precise.
Five of them will hail from the Clemmons area, and the itinerary that is lined up to honor these veterans when they arrive in Washington, D.C., that morning is certainly befitting of their sacrifices in serving our nation.
This trip will include: Jerry Arrington of Clemmons, who served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War; Wilson Porter of Clemmons, who served in the Army during Vietnam; Hank Rudge of Clemmons, who served in the Marines during Vietnam; Bill Plyler of Advance, who served in the Air Force during Vietnam; and Rufus Wright of Clemmons, who served in the Army in the Korean War.
Each veteran is assigned a “Guardian” who is their personal attendant throughout the day.
In what Triad Honor Flight calls “One More Mission,” participants will travel to the Iwo Jima, World War II, Vietnam and Korea Memorials as well as a visit to the sacred grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.
There will be a sendoff for all of the participants on April 27 as they board their chartered flight. The public is also encouraged to be at the airport to welcome them home later that evening between 6:30-7:15 p.m.
Thanks to all of our veterans for their sacrifice and service to our country.
