Sharron ‘Squirt’ Joy (Kirkby) French

On Monday, April 11, 2022, Sharron “Squirt” Joy (Kirkby) French ascended on high. Born Nov. 7, 1936, to Myrtle Ruth and Aubrey James Kirkby, she leaves the fondest of memories with her three sons, Jeffery Douglass, of Clemmons, Barton Wylie (Janice), of Oakmont, Pennsylvania, and Darren James (Deanna), of Charleston, S.C.

French also shared her life with her grandchildren, Natalie French Gandhi (Pritish), Kyle James French (Kassandra), Kirsten Elizabeth French, and Kirk Douglass French (Brooke).

French was also proud of the third generation with Dahlia and Soraya Gandhi, Cooper, Owen and Marshall French.

She was preceded in passing by her loving husband of 53 years, Henry ”Doug” Douglass French. They, indeed, lived happily ever after.

Throughout her time growing up in Tacoma, Washington, and graduating from Stadium High School in 1954, her involvement in the Tahoma yearbook, Pep Club, Future Nurses Club, and Red Cross Representative began a life that embodied her middle name; she truly brought joy to the many lives she touched.

She married the man of her dreams, Doug French, on May 31, 1958, in the Little Church on the Prairie in Lakewood, Washington. From there, their lives and adventure crossed many state lines and interacted with many people as well. She worked with many individuals who experienced mental and physical challenges, donated time to the Purcellville VFD Women’s Auxiliary, contributed a weekly entry in the local newspaper, and volunteered as a poll worker in two states. In her later years, French continued her efforts by knitting lap-warmers for members of the local senior care centers.

In her most recent years, she moved to Clemmons and eventually settled in a neighborhood surrounded by many friends and close to family members. Through neighborhood activities and community travels she made this a home and even discovered the art of trolling of which she kept a favorite print of a chicken in her kitchen as a constant reminder of those bonding friendships.

She hopes that in lieu of flowers that all should donate to their local battered women’s shelter or humane animal rescue shelter.

Robert Terry Hoyle

Robert Terry Hoyle, 69, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, April 15. 2022, at home in Clemmons. Hoyle, born on Aug. 2, 1952, was the son of Barbara McKnight Hoyle and the late Robert Lester Hoyle. He attended Shelby High School and Western Carolina University, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Hoyle had a genuine love of learning and influenced countless students, spending 35 years as an educator at both WCU and Davie High School, where he taught English, Spanish and worked with FCA. He loved Jesus and was involved with Mocks United Methodist and Hillsdale Church, often leading Bible classes and sharing the love of Christ with others. Hoyle will be remembered for his devotion to others, his pursuit of adventure through travel, and his love of literature. He is survived by his mother Barbara Hoyle; brothers, Eric Hoyle of Casar, and Deric (Elena) of Concord; sisters, Wendy Mode of Shelby, and Dawn Blackburn (James) of Kings Mountain; and several nieces, nephews and special friends. A visitation was held from 1-2 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Mocks United Methodist Church in Advance, and the funeral followed at 2 p.m. Burial was at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.

Rachel Eddinger James

Mrs. Rachel Eddinger James, 97, of Winston-Salem passed away early Saturday morning, April 23, 2022, at Vienna Village Assisted Living. She was born in Forsyth County on July 13, 1924, to the late David Elias and May Hege Eddinger. James was retired from AT&T with 30 years of service, and she was a member of Shallowford Baptist Church in Pfafftown. In addition to her parents, James was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Billie Edward James Sr.; son, Billie Edward James Jr.; grandson, Kenan David James; brothers, Will Eddinger, Clifford Hege, Wilson Eddinger, Faris Eddinger, and David Eddinger; sisters, Allie Eddinger Pope, Mae Eddinger Lambeth, Daisy Eddinger Reich, and Rebecca Eddinger Contreras. Surviving are her children, Timothy N. James (Debbie) of Cherokee, Ann James Schuyler (Thom) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Myron M. James (Teresa) of Lexington; grandchildren, Kevin, Kelly, Kristy, Zach, Sarah, Kyle, Josh, Ben, and Deidre; seventeen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Tim James and Pastor Terry Lane officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family would like to express their thanks to Harry and Cozie Cooley, Linda Walker, and June and Howard Flynt for their care and friendship and to Vienna Village Assisted Living for their loving care shown to James. Daniel Long

Daniel Long, 75 of Winston-Salem, passed away on April 24, 2022, at Bermuda Commons. Long was born on June 27, 1946, to the late Francis S. and Louise Long. Long graduated in 1964 from Griffith High School. He then went on to graduate from N.C. State University. Long showed his love for people and country through his veteran status in the U.S. Air Force. Long was active at Hebron United Church of Christ where he served on the board, taught Sunday school, and served as an usher. He was also a member of a Bible study group and Promise Keepers. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Brenda Hollowell Long; brother, Jim Long (Connie); sister, Mary Mendenhall (Jerry); sister-in-law, Carolyn Dombrosky; godchildren, Sammy Dombrosky (Jessica) and Jenny Dombrosky; and many beloved nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at Hebron United Church of Christ Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hebron United Church of Christ.

Dottie Lou Flynt Petree

Dottie Lou Flynt Petree, 95, of Bermuda Run passed away at home on Friday, April 22, 2022.

Petree was born on Sept. 20, 1926, in Forsyth County and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Reynolds High School. She was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church since 1955 and served as a teacher, on the mission team and as a deacon. She also attended and taught at John R. Bender Worship Center at Badin Lake. Petree was an active member of the Western N.C. Women’s Aglow, Soroptimist Club, Credit Women of N.C. and the YMCA Shark Club. She loved gardening, reading, music, swimming and boating.

Petree was preceded in death by her parents, Robert L. Flynt and Lula B. Flynt; sister, Barbara Fields; and John W. Petree.

Her surviving family members include daughters, Judith P. Hobson (Charles), Phyllis P. Crater (Steve), Kathryn P. Kaylor; and son, Robert W. Petree (Cyndi). She has 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, with Rev. Christa Warise and Dr. Gina Brock officiating. A family visitation will follow the service at the church.

George Stuart Scott

George Stuart Scott, a physician who took great pride in caring for countless patients during his lengthy career, passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2022, in Clemmons. Scott was born in Augusta, Georgia, on March 22, 1940. His father, George Milton Scott, was an English and journalism teacher at the Academy of Richmond County in Augusta for 45 years. His mother, Virginia Stuart Scott, was also an educator in the Richmond County school system.

Scott graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1958, where he was cadet brigade commander of the ROTC. He was also captain of the rifle team. From there, he attended Duke University in Durham for both his undergraduate studies and medical school. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1961 and his doctorate in 1966.

He met the love of his life, Mary Ann Lea, while working at the Episcopal Student Center at Duke in 1960. They married in 1966 in Raleigh.

Scott’s internship was at Duke University Medical Center. His residency and fellowship were at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was a lieutenant commander with the Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1968-1970. He went into private practice of internal medicine and pulmonary diseases in Montgomery County, Maryland, from 1970 to 2004. After closing his practice, he worked as a contract physician for the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart in Savannah, Georgia, until retirement in 2007.

Scott was so kind, loving, and supportive. He was also quite the character. He loved to tell stories, and was the ultimate prankster. Scott had many interests, including sailboat racing and goose hunting. He was a voracious reader of military history, and enjoyed being a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He became a pony club dad extraordinaire, and loved watching his daughters compete in horse trials. In later years, he relished his role as granddad of his three grandchildren.

Adored and cherished by his children, grandchildren and many close friends, Scott is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Lea Scott, daughters Mary Stuart Gregory and Georgia Lea Scott, sons-in-law Christopher Gregory and Bryon Rubery, and grandchildren Joshua Gregory, David Rubery and Elizabeth Rubery.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 25, 2022, at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Clemmons. A reception will follow at Tanglewood Park Manor House. Janet Forbes Jones Shore

Mrs. Janet Forbes Jones Shore, 78, of Clemmons passed away peacefully at her home on Monday April 18, 2022. Shore was born to the late Elmer Burgess Jones Sr., and Vida Marie Forbes Jones on Sept. 2, 1943, in Camden County.

She graduated from Camden County High School in 1962, where she then went on to nursing school in order to become a licensed practical nurse at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Shore took much pride in her work within the hospital, but also her work within her home. She was a loving mother and homemaker to her children in which she adored. In her free time, she enjoyed dancing, painting, and spending time with her family.

Shore was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer Burgess Jones Sr., and Vida Marie Forbes Jones; her loving husband of 35 years, Jack Eugene Shore; sisters, Bertie Sanderlin, Alma Mullins, and Joyce Lambertson, and her brother, E.B. Jones.

Her surviving family members include her son, John Evan Shore; daughter, Amanda S. Wilkins; stepson, Jack E. Shore Jr.; grandchildren, Hannah Cason, Sarah Elizabeth Causey, April Marie Shore, Alison Mae Shore, Andrea Mackenzie Shore, Seana Joyce Shore and Errette Shore; great-grandchildren, Carolina Vidalise Cason and T.J. Causey; and several other special nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service was held at noon on Sunday April 24, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. John Bishop officiating.

Graciela Oramas-Torres

Graciela Oramas-Torres passed away on April 15, 2022, in Advance. She was born on Nov. 10, 1946, in Bogotá, Colombia. She was the daughter of Jesús María Oramas and Rosa Oliva Torres.

Oramas-Torres was a hardworking and multifaceted woman who had several businesses in Colombia. The first one was a preschool, then a sweatshirt factory, and finally she sold gold. In the United States, she opened her own cleaning business which operated it in New Jersey and then in North Carolina for many years.

She was a dedicated family woman: a true matriarch. Oramas-Torres loved spending time cooking and teaching her family how to cook her traditional Colombian recipes.

Oramas-Torres leaves behind her children, Gonzalo and Luisa; her daughter-in-law Maxi; her grandchildren, Sebastian, Paula, Nicolás, Camila, and Nathaly; her siblings, Isabela, Angie, Nora, Ana Maria, and Antonio Oramas; and numerous very special nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends who became her family.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons. Funeral mass was at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2022, at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Elaine Marshall York

Mrs. Elaine Marshall York, 76, of Clemmons passed away Monday, April 18, 2022, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 6, 1946, in Davie County to the late Thomas K. Marshall and Lera Carter Marshall. She was a former member of her childhood church, Dulin United Methodist Church and had retired as an accounting clerk for Walmart after 27 years of service. She is preceded in death by sisters, Sarah Luper and JoAnn Smith; brothers, Frank and Tom Marshall; and son, Andrew York. She is survived by her husband, John Blaine York Sr.; son, John Blaine York Jr.; grandchildren, Joshua Luke York and Jessica Hooper (Davy); great-grandsons, Langston and Kellynn Hooper; brothers, John Marshall (Adna), William Marshall (Johnna) and Mark Marshall (Pandora); sisters, Betty Moeller (Thomas) and Madeline Hire (John); and brother-in-law, Will York. York attended Davie County Schools with 12 years of perfect attendance. She was a graduate of the class of 1964 from Davie County High School. She loved shopping, decorating and movies. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel prior to the graveside service.
