The Rev. Dr. William Vance Campbell

The Rev. Dr. William Vance Campbell Sr, 83, died at home on June 27, 2022. Born June 4, 1939, in Winston-Salem to the late Ray Vance and Ruth Grose Campbell. William is an alumnus of Moravian College, Campbell University, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He received his DMin and PhD from Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta.

William served numerous Southern Baptist churches as minister of music and youth. Additionally, he served as three Moravian churches as pastor. William retired in 2005 and in retirement served Olivet Moravian as pastoral assistant and Memorial Reformed Church as pastor until 2020.

During his 60 years of ministry, William served as chaplain of police, the highway patrol and various fire departments wherever he lived. He was awarded the Jefferson Award for Public Service in 1995. He was an underwriter and financial planner for Ministers Life Insurance Co.

William enjoyed his civic involvement. He was past president of the Winston-Salem Optimist club, and member of Salem Masonic Lodge No. 289, and the Oasis Shrine Temple for more than 50 years. William was a longtime member of the NC Baptist Singers & Orchestra. He also enjoyed playing in various Moravian bands and in 2019 was recognized for playing in 70 Easter sunrise bands.

In addition to his parents, William was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Cooper Campbell; sisters, Carolyn Campbell Johnson and Martha Campbell Hord; and daughter-in-law, Amy Campbell.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Ann Overman Campbell and stepdaughter, Cynthia Autumn Williams of the home. He is also survived by his children, Carolynn Elizabeth Wood (Tommy), Melody Ruth Lee (Keith), and William Vance Campbell Jr. (Amy); six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, William Johnson, Dub Hord, and Thomas Cooper; sister-in-Law, Kathy Guidry; and by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Mizpah Moravian Church, 3165 Mizpah Church Road in Rural Hall,  with internment to follow at Hope Moravian Church God’s Acre, 2759 Hope Church Road in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Mizpah Moravian and immediately following the internment at Hope Moravian on July 6.

Lynda Dunn Gilley

Mrs. Lynda Dunn Gilley, 92, of Kernersville, passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at Kernersville Medical Center. She was born Jan. 15, 1930, in Davie County to William Ollie Dunn and Nannie Smith Dunn. Lynda grew up in Davie County and loved to travel with her husband, Sam. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Advance and attended Oak Ridge Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Gilley; sisters, Ruth Robertson, Cleo Petree, Gladys Foster and Lorene Petree; and brothers, Vance, Gilmer, Leo and Hubert Dunn. Surviving are her son, Jim Burton; a daughter-in-law, Chris Burton; a stepdaughter, Sheila Beaver (Dennis); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, J.B. Dunn (Gay); a sister-in-law and caregiver, Norma Jean Dunn and other caregivers, Teresa, Jetta, Talisha, Glenda and Pam. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Steve Roberson officiating. Interment followed in Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Advance. The family received friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Shepherds’ Center of Kernersville.

Larry Russell Gregory

Mr. Larry Russell Gregory, 71, of Mocksville, passed away peacefully at home on July 1, 2022. He was born on July 28, 1950, in Winston-Salem to the late William Earl “Scotty” Gregory and Mary Edra Green. He is survived by his wife, Stacy, of 38 years; his adopted daughter, Missy Taylor (Jim); son, Michael (Sarah); daughter, Savanna Click (Nathan); stepchildren, Tracy Fuquay and Michael Strickland (Beth);  grandchildren, Erica Mabe (Patrick), Amber Groce (Jody), JD Mabe (LeighAnne), Bradley Mabe (Kristen), Coty Strickland, Heather Garland (Jake), Lisa Strickland (Josh), Marissa Roberts, Scotty Blankinship, Page Fuquay, Britney Blankinship, Anna Taylor, Keli Taylor, Daylin Click, Jacob Gregory, Mikayla Click, Aiden Cadmen, Deacon Click, and Elizabeth Click; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Bill (Shirley), Ron (Linda), Jerry, and Richard; sister, Barbara; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Posie “Bud” Beck; sister-in-law, Judy Gregory; former brother-in-law, Alonzo Hester; and nephew, Russell Gregory.

Gregory was drafted into the Vietnam War in 1971 and was honorably discharged in 1972. He was an infantryman and cook. After his military service, he worked at RJ Reynolds Tobacco company for 22 years then retired and started a furniture refinishing business, Davie Refinishing, until he medically retired in 2002.

Gregory was an avid fisherman, loved hunting and shooting, and raising chickens and birds. He also loved gardening and woodworking, and made many beautiful pieces of furniture, walking canes and bird houses. He was an excellent artist as well. He enjoyed spending time with his siblings playing cards, going on fishing trips and being in nature. He was gentle, loving and always willing to serve others. He was a friend to all and was known as the peacemaker among his siblings.

Gregory was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he was always willing to serve anyone in need. He served those in his family, his community, and his church family. His loving spirit will be missed among all his friends and family.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Clemmons with Bishop Kevin Griffin officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel.

James Donald ‘Don’ Hall

Mr. James Donald “Don” Hall, 91, of Clemmons passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022. Don was born in Henry County, Virginia, on April 21, 1931, to the late Paul Irvin Hall Sr. and Ella Kate Phibbs Hall. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Don attended Virginia Tech, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He went to work for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, retiring after 35 years of service. Don was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem for 63 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Campbell Hall and a brother, Paul Irvin Hall Jr. Don is survived by his loving wife, Ellen Bruce Hall; son, Stephen David Hall (Jana); granddaughter, Angela Margaret Hall; daughter-in-law, Jamie Shipley Hall-Erath; and a niece, Sandra Hall Thompson. A service to celebrate Don’s life was held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, 2022, in the chapel at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem with Rev. R. Craig Ford officiating. Joann Joyce Burcham Hege

Joann Joyce Burcham Hege, 85, of Clemmons passed away Friday, June 24, 2022 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 20, 1937, in Carroll County, Virginia, to Daniel and Verlie Ruth Wilson Burcham. Surviving are her husband, John Hege; son, Stacy (Frank) Hege; a daughter, Jenea Stanley (Scott); grandsons, Zachary Stanton Hege and Bly Triplett; two sisters and three brothers. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel. Following the visitation there will be a 3 p.m. service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. Rebecca ‘Becky’ Tucker Legg

Mrs. Rebecca “Becky” Tucker Legg, 74, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Clemmons Medical Center. She was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, on Sept. 13, 1947, to the late A.G. Tucker and Patty Pettus Tucker. Legg enjoyed scrapbooking and was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother.  Preceding her in death was a brother, Greg Tucker. Surviving is her husband of 57 years, Wayne Legg; daughter, Theresa Potts (Christopher); granddaughters, Madison and Delaney Potts; sister, Brenda Hooper (David); sister-in-law, Tina Tucker; niece, Candy (Joe Don); nephews, Davey (Brandy), Keith (Agnes), and Lance (Rochelle); also surviving are several great-nieces and nephews. Danny Lee McGuire

Mr. Danny Lee McGuire, 78, of Clemmons passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, June 25, 2022. He was born Aug. 12, 1943, in Forsyth County to Austin D. McGuire Sr. and Doris Louise Craft McGuire. Danny was a member of South Fork Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Melissa McGuire Trinkle (Troy) of Advance; son, Jason McGuire of Oldsmar, Florida; the mother of his children, Gloria McGuire; grandchildren, Peyton McGuire Trinkle, Garrett Lee Trinkle and Morgan McGuire; sister, June Parris; brother, Austin “Booger” McGuire Jr.; and his special dog, Mia McGuire. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance. The family received friends following the service at the funeral home. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Sue Carter Miller

Mrs. Sue Carter Miller, 74, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2022. She was born Aug. 1, 1947, in Forsyth County to the late Hubert and Pansy Carter.  Sue had a passion for many things, specifically reading, the beach, and most of all her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she enjoyed spoiling. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Linda Kiger. Sue is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Jerry Wayne Miller; daughters: Tracey Culler (Allen), Kelly White (Michael), and Shannon McKernan (Mark); grandchildren: Jordan White, Kaitlyn McKernan, and Luke McKernan; and brother, David Carter (Nancy). A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. James David Plott

James David Plott passed peacefully at the Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington on July 3, 2022. He was a kind, honest and loyal man with a thirst for knowledge and a love for the natural world.

He grew up in rural Advance in a time before the current hustle and bustle. His parents’ house was located in the southeast corner of the I-40 and NC-801 intersection; although Interstate 40 stopped there at the time and did not continue any farther west. He enjoyed recounting the genuine people and places of the bygone days in Advance, Smith Grove and Farmington.

As a child, he enjoyed watching all of the western cowboy shows, taking family vacations, and quarreling with his two older sisters, especially Nancy.

As an adolescent, he enjoyed playing baseball, and later softball, as well as hunting and fishing, especially in Farmington.

Later in life, he enjoyed playing cowboy, riding bareback broncos in local rodeos before multiple injuries took their toll and led him to stop, but not before he learned to live by the motto “When you get knocked off the horse, you have to dust yourself off and get right back in the saddle.” He enjoyed keeping up with the national rodeo circuits, and he especially enjoyed watching the PRCA on The Cowboy Channel.

He started his career working on the tobacco market for RJ Reynolds, then on various farms around Davie County, including South Fork on Woodward Road and Whip O Will on Cana Road. Later, he worked as a project manager for Davis-Martin-Powell & Associates, a civil engineering firm in High Point, and then as public works director for Davie County. He knew many people in the county and would rarely drive down any road without waving to someone he knew.

He had a deep respect for Native Americans and shared a passion for their culture and values. He collected many books and enjoyed studying the history of the various tribes. He even learned to speak the Cherokee language. In 2015, he enjoyed a solo mission trip to Arizona to help rehabilitate a Christian church in the town of Window Rock, the capital of the Navajo Reservation. Toward the end of his life, he enjoyed reading the accounts of early interactions with the Cherokee Indians from the perspective of the Moravian Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Henry Jr. “J.H.” and Betty Plott. He is survived by his only child, James Read (Alyssa) Plott, and his grandson, James Samuel Plott, of Thomasville, sisters, Gail Walker of Advance and Nancy Harpe (Arnie) of Mocksville, and several nieces and nephews.

Betty Jo Jones Turner

Betty Jo Jones Turner, 88, passed away on June 28, 2022, at Accordius Health of Clemmons.

Betty was born in Charleston, West Virginia, on June 23, 1934, to the late Hersell and Blanche Jones. Betty enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and tending to her flowers. She was a talented quilt maker. Her family will cherish the quilts she has left behind. Quilts she sewed with love in each stitch.

She was a devoted mother and gentle grandmother. Betty grew sweeter with age. Her family will miss her kind heart and loving adoration.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Royce Hampton Turner and son, Allen Royce Turner. Surviving are sons, Stan Turner (Wendy) of Advance and Perry Turner of Davidson County; grandchildren, Derek Turner (Sherrie) of Advance, Bryn Taylor (Nick) of Advance, Shayna Morgan (Josh) of Advance, Wesly Turner (Yulanda), and Allison Turner; and several great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Brookstone of Clemmons for the care given to Betty. Their kindness and compassion for her the last three years have been a comfort.

A graveside service was held Friday, July 1, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.

Oran Rau Wendt

Oran Rau Wendt, 85, passed away at Novant Forsyth Medical Center on June 25, 2022.

Oran is predeceased by his parents, Erich and Vera Wendt; sisters Kay Nespor and Dora Dotson; and a brother Fred Wendt all of Wichita, Kansas.

Oran is survived by Joy Wendt, his loving wife of 65 years. They were married in Wichita, Kansas, on June 16, 1957. He is also survived by brothers, Erich Wendt Jr., Wichita, Kansas, and Frank Wendt of Brush Prairie, Washington, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Oran is remembered by son, Kyle (Cathy) of Bermuda Run; daughter Deborah Wendt of Bermuda Run; grandchildren, Jeff Wendt and Lindsay Gioeli of Bermuda Run, Jay and Anna Daggett and Mitchell and Ashley Kyle of Clemmons, and Chris and Shelby Moxley and Sadee and Daniel Moxley of Mocksville.

Oran is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

Kyle’s grandchildren are Brody, Blakely, Bennett and Brooks Daggett, and Debbie’s grandchildren are Adeline and Elsie Kyle, Avery Zerr, Emmy and Ava Moxley, and Willow Moxley.

Oran was born in Manter, Kansas, on Nov. 25, 1936, and was part of the U.S. Army and National Guard while in Kansas. He had a career in telecommunications for 36 years until retirement and then became a real estate agent for 15 years. He served on the deacon board of Clemmons Baptist Church.

A celebration of life was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Clemmons First Baptist Church. Inurnment followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
