Fred Donald ‘Don’ James

Mr. Fred Donald “Don” James, 87, passed away Friday, July 8, 2022. He was born Feb. 23, 1935, in Forsyth County to the late Fred Strickland James and Betty Myers James. Don graduated from Clemmons High School, class of 1953. He then married the love his life, Dolores Sprinkle James, July 3, 1954.  Don worked for McLean Trucking for 20 plus years, and after that worked security for Winston-Salem Health Care until his retirement. He loved to help people anyway he could, always putting their needs ahead of his own. Don was of the Christian faith and was a caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy James and half-sister, Lucille Tinkler. In addition to his loving wife of 68 years, Don is survived by his son, Stephen James Sr. (Sandy); grandchildren, Stephen James Jr. (Melissa), Shawn James and Samantha Joyner (Colby); and great-grandchildren, Rowan James and Kendall James.

Mary Jane Manning

Ms. Mary Jane Manning of Lewisville passed away July 2, 2022, after her long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Mary died peacefully while embraced by her children at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mary was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Jan. 19, 1944, to the late Edward T. Manning Sr. and Mary J. Manning. She retired from Forsyth Country Day School Accounting Department in June 2010. Mary loved to paint, read, get together with the girls, playing games and serving at her church food pantry. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. A longtime member at Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem prior to transferring to Trinity United Methodist Church. Mary, (AKA Grandma Mary, Nana and G’Ma) was a very loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Thomas Manning Jr. Surviving is her brother, John Manning (Cathy); sister-in-law, Barbara Manning; children, John Jay, Linda Houle (Dennis), Kevin Jay (Lawana) and Kathy Jay (Sherri Draughn); grandchildren, Meagan DeJesus (Ray), Sean Houle (Ellie), Corey Jay, Chris Houle, Lacy McNeill, Ellis McNeill, Katie Draughn and Blake Draughn; great-grandchildren, Hailey Jay, Abbey Jay, Tucker Houle, Tanner Houle, Isabel DeJesus, and Hank DeJesus; also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a lifelong childhood friend, Ann “Corky” Corcoran and many other dear friends. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel with Rev. Neill Shaw officiating. Shirley Taylor Marriott

Shirley Taylor Marriott, 87, passed into the immediate presence of her Lord and Savior on July 2, 2022, in the serenity of Mountain Valley Hospice. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved Gil Marriott, and was the last of her siblings, Jackie Taylor Rogers and Bob Taylor. She is survived by her two children, Dawn Gobble Hoback (George Hoback) and Ross Taylor Gobble (Kathy Gobble) and close family friend Alex Helsabeck. She spent her last few years at Cadence Living in Clemmons where she received loving care. Her artistry began in early childhood and would evolve as a multi-talented artist best known as a goldsmith. Shirley enjoyed entertaining her family and friends, caring for her azaleas and gardening and working tirelessly with her Sunny Side Stitchers group she founded at her beloved Home Moravian Church. A visitation will be at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Saturday July 23, 2022. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2022, at Home Moravian Church with Rev. Andrew Heil officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Moravian Graveyard.

Virginia Stewart Reece

Mrs. Virginia Stewart Reece, 84, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Davie Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County to the late William Clifton Stewart and Rosanna Shelton Stewart on May 27, 1938. Virginia was a longtime member of Friends Baptist Church in Clemmons. She loved her church and especially her Sunday school class, she referred to them as a close-knit family. Virginia enjoyed working in the yard, taking care of her beautiful flowers, but her favorite pastime was picking up sticks out of the yard. She was a friendly person and loved talking with people, she never met a stranger. Virginia will truly be missed. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Reece. Virginia is survived by two sons, James Bart Reece, and Mitchell Curtis Reece (Christine); grandson, Andrew Curtis Reece; brother, Arthur Stewart. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at Shallowford Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Matthew Pope officiating. Mrs. Mary Martha Slack Teague

Mrs. Mary Martha Slack Teague, 93, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, July 3, 2022, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mary was born in Hunt County, Texas, to the late William Anderson Slack and Bertha Dawson Slack on March 31, 1929. Mary retired from Tanglewood Park after many years of service as an office supervisor. She was a longtime member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. Mary loved being with family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Phil Teague; four brothers and five sisters. She is survived by her husband, Maynard Teague; son, Dean Teague (Denise); grandchildren, Ashley, Casey, Zaine (Larissa) and Sean; great-grandchildren, Coy, Chloe, Aiden and Emerson; daughter-in-law, Renee’ Teague and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2022, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Mary Miller officiating.

Sara Mae Copeland Thomas

Sara Mae Copeland Thomas, 85, of Advance and formerly of Canton, Georgia, passed away Friday, July 8, 2022. Thomas is survived by her daughter, Ruth Thomas McIntyre (Tim) of Advance; granddaughters, Sharity Nesnick (Michal), of Canton, Georgia, and Erika Neldner (Michael), of Woodstock, Georgia; grandchildren, Hunter, Kelsey and Jaeda Nesnick, and Jackson and Evan Neldner; sisters, Mary Copeland Stewart (John), of Cartersville, and Dorothy Copeland Carlton, of Woodstock; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Thomas; parents, Dewey Albert Copeland and Willie Mae Lancaster Copeland; siblings, Albert Copeland, Harold Copeland, J.W. Copeland and Mozelle Copeland Oliver. She was born in Marietta, Georgia and lived in Canton, Georgia and Panama City, Florida with her family. Thomas was affectionally known as Mom, Maw Maw, Aunt Sara and Aunt Saka. There was nothing she loved more than her family. From a young age, she put family first, leaving school to help raise her younger siblings. A true Southern cook, she always made sure everyone had something to eat and would whip up the best Southern biscuits around at any time of the day.  Thomas was a homemaker who enjoyed taking care of others. But she wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty digging in the garden, harvesting crops, cleaning fish for supper or even cutting the grass. She enjoyed canning their harvests of fruits, especially pear preserves and blackberry jelly, and vegetables for winter. She loved birds, raising several parakeets, cockatiels and a Conure Parrot named Kiwi. She enjoyed the beauty in nature, and her yard was always filled with beautiful hydrangeas, yellow bells and azaleas. She spent a lot of time outdoors camping and fishing with her husband, daughter and later her grandchildren. She could pilot a boat, pull a camper and pitch a tent. She wasn’t your typical homemaker and whenever she needed to, there really wasn’t much she could not do. Thomas always had a warm hug to give and never met a stranger. She will be missed by the many people she impacted in her 85 years of life. Thomas will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Sosebee Funeral Home, 191 Jarvis St., Canton, Georgia. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons, and Sosebee Funeral Home in Canton, Georgia, is serving the family.
