With the first four weeks of school complete, there’s much to celebrate, including West’s varsity football team securing their first win of the season on Sept. 23.
The Titans have had a rough start to the year, suffering losses to A.C. Reynolds on the road (37-0), Oak Grove at home (23-14), Weddington at home (49-32) and Mount Tabor on the road (28-13). Hoping to salvage the season, the Titans played Parkland last Friday at Jerry Peoples Stadium and celebrated a 58-0 victory, snapping their four-game losing streak. While the win is sweet, the Titans must now focus on the tough games ahead of them in the Central Piedmont 4-A Conference, starting with a game at Glenn on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The girls varsity tennis team also secured a win against Parkland last week, taking down the Mustangs 4-0 on Sept. 19. The team then fell to Atkins 6-3 on Sept. 20, but bounced back to take down Glenn 8-1 on Sept. 21.
The varsity field hockey team had a great week as well, defeating both Summit and Mount Tabor 2-0 on Sept. 19 and Sept. 20, respectively. The varsity volleyball team was also successful, taking a 3-0 victory over Mount Tabor. The boys varsity soccer team fell to Reagan 1-0 on Sept. 19 but stayed strong to come back and beat Davie 6-0 on Sept. 21.
Homecoming is fast approaching. The week of Oct. 10 is School Spirit Week, and each day will feature a different theme, which are yet to be announced. The annual Powder Puff girls football game will take place between the junior and senior classes on Tuesday, Oct. 11, and the homecoming football game versus the Davie War Eagles will be held on Friday, Oct. 14. The homecoming court, who will be presented at the game, will be announced on Oct. 6.
Exam exemption policies are something that have been on the minds of many students lately as well. Before the pandemic, exemptions were only for students who had achieved an A in the class with five or fewer absences, a B with three or fewer absences or and C with one or no absences. Once COVID hit, however, the district ruled that it would be unfair to deny students exemptions to exams simply because they had to be out for long periods of time due to the virus. WS/FCS dropped the absence requirement and left only the grade standards, so that all students with As, Bs and Cs could be exempt. This has been the case for the past two years, but many students and teachers believed that the absence requirement would be reinstated this year, due to the mask and close-contact mandates ending. However, the district has decided to keep the pandemic exemption policy for at least this school year, allowing students to not worry about absences for at least another two semesters.
The first month back on campus has been a successful one. We’re all looking forward to what the next few months here at the village will hold.
