Ruth Allen Bishop

Mrs. Ruth Allen Bishop, 92, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2022, at her home. She was born Aug. 9, 1930, in Davie County to Marma Kimball Allen and Etta Regina Riddle Allen. Ruth was a faithful member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. She retired from Piedmont Airlines and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools System. Ruth loved greatly and was greatly loved by many. She fiercely loved and was proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild and each one of them knew they were the best. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Bishop and a son, Allen Bishop. Surviving are her children, Martha Perez (Nick), David Bishop (Ann Marie) and Jon Bishop (Kellie); five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and sisters, Elizabeth Neal, Julia Howell and Louise Fulk. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. Paula Northrup officiating. Interment followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oscar L. Robert Owen Cobb

Mr. Robert Owen Cobb, 70, of Clemmons passed away on Sept. 23, 2022, after an extended illness. He was born on Sept. 20, 1952, in Rockingham County as the only child of the late Johnnie Dixon Cobb and Frances Totten Cobb. He lived on the family farm in the Yanceyville/Reidsville area of Caswell County before moving to Winston-Salem after he married in 1992. He and his family moved to Clemmons in 2006. Cobb loved living in the Clemmons community and attending Clemmons First Baptist Church. He graduated from Bartlett Yanceyville High School in 1970, after which he pursued his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Elon University, graduating in 1974. Following college, he was employed as an environmental chemist at Carolina ByProducts Group from May 1974 to June 1999. Seeking a career change and recognizing the trend toward technology, Cobb returned to Rockingham Technical Community College to obtain the Certified Network Engineer and was employed as network systems administrator for Alamance Regional Hospital through March 2004, when health issues required he step down. Cobb loved gardening and had his own garden each year beginning at age 11 and continuing until his last days. Other interests were traveling and writing. He combined his interests by writing iBooks about each trip he took, with a slant on the environment, politics, culture and natural aspects of the places he visited. He also wrote a historical murder novel, political analysis and other nontravel-related iBooks as well. All in all, his writings total about 70 iBooks. Cobb truly loved his family, immediate and extended. He extensively studied his lineage long before DNA kits became all the rage. In 1992, he married Joyce Ann Hensley of Winston-Salem. The family grew in 1999 when the Cobbs traveled to Khabarovsk, Russia, to adopt their children, Johnnie Dixon Cobb II and Clara Elizabeth Cobb. In addition to his wife and children, Cobb is survived by mother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Hensley; sisters-in-law, Connie Steinberg and Deborah Wilson (Wayne); niece, Heather Wilson (Adam Alphin); nephews, Brent Wilson (Cat) and Randall Steinberg; great-nephews Thomas and Zachary Alphin; and step-great-niece Yumi Alphin. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Sunday Oct. 1, 2022, at Clemmons First Baptist Church, located at 3530 Clemmons Road in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, the family would be pleased for you to make donations to the First Baptist Church or the Clemmons Fire Department.

Waneta Showalter Denton

Mrs. Waneta Showalter Denton, 91, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022. She was born March 28, 1931, in Stark County, Ohio, to Daniel Warren Showalter and Gladys Elizabeth Moomaw Showalter. Denton was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and in the church orchestra. She retired as a teacher after 39 years of service. She led childrens’ ministries at several churches and led many children to the Lord. Denton was preceded in death by her husband, Victor H. Denton, and a brother, Glen Showalter. Surviving are her children, Katrina Denton, Timothy Denton, Gretchen Rouse (David) and Ruthanna Bridges (Bobby); grandchildren, Abigail Denton, William Denton, Jacob Denton and Robby Bridges; and brothers, Harold Showalter and Carl Showalter. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Steve Hardy officiating. Interment will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family will receive friends one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Edward John Dolan Jr.

Mr. Edward John Dolan Jr., 75, passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2022, at his home. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 27, 1947, to the late Edward John Dolan Sr. and Flora Sarno Dolan. Dolan served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years during the Vietnam War. He loved fishing, antique hotrods and traveling. Most importantly he enjoyed spending time with his family. Preceding him in death was a brother-in-law, Michael Corey and a lifelong friend, Charles Behenna. Surviving is his loving wife of 46 years, Elaine Doherty Dolan; son, Christopher Dolan (Colleen) of Middleboro, Massachusetts; daughter, Kimberly Dolan Bartell (Kenneth) of Mt. Airy; grandchildren, Avirey, Samuel, Colton and Norah Bartell and Connor, Devian, Ian Pearson; great-granddaughter, Vivian Pearson; sisters, Kathleen Ginnetty (Gerard), Jane Corey and Janice Dolan and partner, Steve Rodgerson; brother, Steven Dolan (Carol); also surviving are lifelong friends, Dennis Pateras and Salvatore Betti. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022, at Salisbury National Cemetery with Pastor Eddie Sawyers officiating. The family received friends 4-6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Toys For Tots.

Margaret C. King

Margaret C. King, 85, of Winston-Salem, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 20, 2022, at Trinity Elms Nursing & Rehab Center. She was born on July 19, 1937, in Clemmons to William Anderson and Minnie Luberta Wood Cornwell.

Margaret loved cooking, listening to music and spending time with her family that loved her very much. She was a graduate of Clemmons High School in 1956.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca King of Winston-Salem; siblings, Jane Cornwell of Yadkinville, Peggy Saylor (Don) of Clemmons and Steve Cornwell of Clemmons.

In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her husband, Claude “Durwood” King; daughter, Anita Faith King; son, Claude Brandon King; brothers, Tom Cornwell, and Robert Cornwell; and sisters, Mary Sue Phillips, and Sarah Logan.

Margaret’s ashes will be spread at a later date. In lieu of funeral services, and to honor Margaret’s life, the family asks that all who wish to participate make a donation to The Enrichment Center, 1006 Marshall Street SW, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

Mary Ann (Baron) Maynard

Mary Ann (Baron) Maynard, adored and loving mother, 87, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2022.

Known for her love of chocolates and cheesecake, Mary Ann was an admirer of the theater, opera and ballet, and enjoyed afternoon tea, bingo and mystery novels. She never met an art or craft that she was afraid to tackle. She was an avid sewer and quilter, as well as crocheter, knitter and needleworker. She painted and made ceramics, jewelry, dolls and teddy bears. Her cooking repertoire included classic Polish dishes and an amazing spaghetti sauce.

Mary Ann was born Aug. 23, 1935, in Lackawanna, N.Y. She made life-long friends while attending Immaculata Academy, and after graduating, worked as a legal secretary before marrying Jack (USAF). The couple and their growing family lived across the country, including in California, Wyoming, Texas and New Hampshire, before settling in Winston-Salem. Mary Ann worked for years at JCPenney, Wachovia and the Federal Bankruptcy Court.

A devout Catholic, Mary Ann was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy, and later, St. Leo the Great. A member of Saint Teresa’s Guild, she made dear friends and enjoyed meeting with the ladies monthly to play Canasta and socialize. Admired for her beautiful handwriting, Mary Ann volunteered at Catholic Charities writing birthday cards and donor thank-you cards until she was no longer able to do so.

Above everything else, Mary Ann lived for her family. She provided a strong foundation and a warm and welcoming home, not just for her family, but for all who visited. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who never stopped worrying about her kids, no matter how old they were. She will be remembered for her selflessness, kindness and caring.

She is pre-deceased by her husband, John “Jack” Maynard; parents, Julia Baron (Jukich) and Victor Baron; and brother, Victor Baron. She will be terribly missed by her children: Jeffrey (Laurie); James (Nichole); Kevin (Cara); Amy Gilkerson (Joe); Jill Barnes (Jack); and Lynn Rogers (Andy); and grandchildren: Rachel, Noah, Bruce, Gabriel and Evelyn; as well as so many other family members and friends.

The family expresses its deepest gratitude for the loving care she received at Clemmons Village II these past years.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. A reception will follow from 1-3 p.m. at the Robert F. Miller Center located at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem.

Because Mary Ann loved purple, the family asks that you wear that (or another bright color), in celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities (Diocese of Charlotte), or Our Lady of Victory National Shrine.
