Mary Elizabeth Jones Hensley
Mary Elizabeth Jones Hensley, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022.
Hensley was born on Dec. 2, 1927, in Roanoke, Virginia, to the late Ernest Albert Jones and Clara Lawrence Jones. She graduated from Lewisville High School in 1946, where she excelled in basketball, high jump and speech competition. After high school, she eloped in June to marry her high school sweetheart, Marvin Allen Hensley.
Proverbs 31:10-31 describes a virtuous woman who is also kind, hardworking, talented and greatly loved by her husband and family. This also describes the life well lived by Hensley, spending most of her years since 1956 in the village of Clemmons with her beloved husband Marvin, who preceded her in death on March 7, 2013. She recently resided at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living in Clemmons.
Retired from Singer Company after 31 years, she served as manager, buyer, salesperson and sewing instructor. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter who served in quilting ministry. Hensley served her community in leadership roles with Community Development, Clemmons Civic Club Auxiliary, Home Demonstration, PTA, and local and regional Girl Scouts. Through her community service, she enhanced many lives. She was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and a devoted Christian example to all who knew her.
Hensley will be remembered for her love of family and church, her dedication to her husband, her strong work ethic, her timeless energy and playful smile as she danced the Charleston or clogged. She will also be remembered for many wonderful meals she so lovingly prepared for her family, neighbors and friends.
Hensley is survived by her daughters, Connie Hensley Steinberg, Deborah Hensley Wilson (Thomas) and Joyce Hensley Cobb (Robert, deceased); brother, Glenn Allen Jones; and her husband’s sister, Brenda Hensley Anderson (Grady, deceased). She was known as Memaw, Meme, Grandma and Grammy and deeply loved each of her grandchildren, Heather Darlene Wilson (Adam Alphin), Brent Wayne Wilson (Catherine), Randall Allen Steinberg, Johnnie Dixon Cobb II and Clara Elizabeth Cobb; and her great-grandchildren, Thomas Glenn Alphin, William Zachary Alphin and step-great-granddaughter Yumi Alphin. Hensley was a loving aunt to Pamela Blanc, Stephen Frye, Beverly Carter, Keith Carter, Michael Carter, Sonya Kellar, Phillip Barton, Donna Wishon, Gordon Jones, Gregory Jones, Stacy Jones, Michael Jones and Dena Hawks.
In addition to her husband and parents, Hensley was preceded in death by her stepmother, Etta Hayes Jones; brothers, Clyde Leroy Jones (June, deceased), Albert Edward Jones, (Peggy, deceased) and Jerry Ray Jones; and stepsister, Peggy Swaim. She was also preceded in death by her husband’s parents, Fred Franklin Hensley and Grace McHargue Hensley; and by his siblings, Arvel Spease Hensley (Olene, deceased), Ella Hensley Frye (Raymond, deceased) and Dorotha Hensley Carter (Gene).
Hensley’s life was full and honorably lived. As stated in 2 Timothy 4:7, it can be said of Hensley: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, at Boyer’s Chapel Church of Christ, with Mr. James Percival and Pastor Wallace Cole officiating.
