Stephen F. McAdams
Stephen F. McAdams, loving husband, doting father and grandfather, and lifelong educator died on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, after an unanticipated series of cardiac events following surgery at the age of 75.
Born and raised in Durham, Steve attended Durham High School and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970. He was a lifelong Tar Heel and especially enjoyed basketball season. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English, then started his teaching career at Wiley Middle School in Winston-Salem. In 1985, he transferred to West Forsyth High School to teach ninth grade English and shared his love of grammar and literature, especially Edgar Allen Poe. Coaching soccer and diving at West was initially a way to make ends meet, but quickly became another way for him to impact the lives of young people. He loved his students, athletes and colleagues. He also enjoyed leading and chaperoning many high school student trips to Europe and the South Pacific. One of his favorite parts of those trips was running into former students while in a foreign country. He ran into former students whenever he traveled abroad, to Disney World, to the beach and elsewhere. He lived with his family in Clemmons for 29 years.
Steve moved to Raleigh in 2007 to help found Endeavor Charter School where he was the school’s first director. He oversaw the opening of the school as well as the move to its permanent home in Wake Forest. He retired in 2015 and was celebrated at Endeavor with a “Day of Steve” including a flash mob of all ECS students. In retirement, Steve enjoyed gardening, movies, crossword puzzles and decorating. He especially enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his four grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Teresa Dowdy McAdams; daughter Christi Whiteside (Rob); and son, Brandon McAdams (Maija). He is also survived by four grandchildren he adored: Adam Whiteside, Ashley Whiteside, Connor McAdams and Ryan McAdams; and his older brother, Gene McAdams.
Family and guests are encouraged to attend his celebration of life at Norse Brewing Company at 203 Brooks St., Wake Forest on Saturday, March 4, 2023, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Endeavor Charter School Foundation.
