With almost a full week of the 2023-24 school year under Titans’ belts, there is much to recap and reflect on.

West Forsyth athletics continued their success amid the start of the school year. The varsity football team took down Oak Grove on the road on Aug. 25 with a final score of 40-29. After losing the first four games of the season last year and finishing 4-7 overall, the 2-0 start is a good sign for the Titans.

Hopefully, they will continue to ride that momentum into their next game on the road against Weddington on Friday.

The girls varsity volleyball team took a 3-0 win over Western Guilford at home on Aug. 24, as well as facing Mount Tabor at home on Aug. 29 and West Stokes at home yesterday, Aug. 30. They face their next opponent, Parkland, on the road tonight, Aug. 31.

The boys varsity soccer team beat Watauga 4-0 on the road on Aug. 21, as well as visiting Forbush on Aug. 29. They take on Northwest Guilford on the road tonight. The varsity field hockey team played Mount Tabor on the road on Aug. 28 and will take on Asheville at home tonight.

West extracurriculars will be getting back into swing in the next few weeks as well, including auditions for the fall plays, which are being held Sept. 6, 7 and 8.

While much of West’s policies outlined in the student handbook are the same as last year’s, there are some slight changes and modifications.

Any food delivery orders will now be held at the front office until the end of the school day. The policy of students not being allowed to sit in their cars at lunch or during free periods will now be more enforced, as well as existing policies regarding the dress code.

Students who have permission to leave West’s campus for Career Center or Forsyth Tech classes are now also required to wear a tag on their backpacks that lets administrators know that they are allowed to leave at allocated times of the day.

This year, in particular, because of the new software used for schedule planning, many West students have been assigned schedules that don’t reflect their class choices, as well as performing arts, CTE classes and other electives taking a hit from the way the software schedules them.

Counselors and administrators are working on fixing the mistakes as much as they can. If you want to request a schedule change, there is a link to do so on the West Forsyth website or in the Student Services office.

While there may be a few complications in the short term, as a whole, this school year is looking to be a good one.
