The Police Benevolent Association of North Carolina recognized Rep. Jeff Zenger (R-Forsyth) with the 2023 Legislative Excellence Award for his work on Senate Bill 9, House Bill 470, and dedication to helping officers in his district and across the state. 

House Bill 470, which language was amended into Senate Bill 9 passed the General Assembly this session. This language will require that the city of Greensboro and the city of Winston-Salem create a civil service board. 

The board will consist of five members and will basically serve as the human resources division for public servants and also hold public hearings for the police and fire departments. 

“We have witnessed instances where due process for those who work in public safety” said Zenger. “The civil service board strengthens due process for our first responders. I have had a front row seat to what our officers do and so it is a natural fit for me to work with the PBA.”

Many other cities and towns around North Carolina already have civil service boards including Charlotte, Wilmington, Asheville, Raleigh, New Bern and Statesville.
