CLEMMONS — Despite the abridged school week, there was no doubt that exams, end-of-semester assignments and extracurriculars have kept day-to-day life on campus busy.

While students are acing it in the classroom, they’ve also found some success in their after-school activities this past week as well.

The boys varsity basketball team split with their conference opponents last week, with 68-59 win over East Forsyth at home on Jan. 17 and a close 63-59 loss to Mount Tabor on the road, and visited Davie earlier this week, Jan. 23, for the start of a four game road trip. They visit Parkland Friday, Jan. 26, for their next game. The girls varsity basketball team had a rough week, with 30-26 and 62-38 losses to East Forsyth and Mount Tabor, respectively, last week, but every game is a new opportunity. They too started their stretch of four straight road games at Davie on Tuesday and face Parkland Friday. The boys varsity wrestling team was also undefeated in all of their matches this past weekend to take the win at the Northern Duals championship.

After multiple rounds of auditions, many talented students and a weather delay, the stage is finally set for the latest installment in the series of musicals put on by West Forsyth’s drama department over the years. With a nearly unprecedented double casting of every lead role, juniors Addison Nix and Reese Gardner are set to co-lead the Titans’ production of “Anastasia” in just a few months, March 20-23. Now, the hard work begins to put together all the pieces needed for that massive show. The musical will truly be a culmination of the talents of all the performing arts departments at West, from theatre to chorus to dance to band and orchestra, so make sure to save the date.

Registration meetings are right around the corner, and with them come the often daunting task of selecting classes for the following school year. As a senior, who has gone through this process numerous times now, the biggest tip is to go in having at least a rough idea of what you want your schedule to look like, not just what classes, but the layout of your day as well. AP versus honors versus standard classes is also a consideration. For rising sophomores who are looking to try some AP classes for the first time, I highly recommend AP government and politics, which counts as your sophomore civics credit, and AP environmental science. For juniors who are looking for some more demanding yet rewarding APs to add to their resumes, I personally loved both AP U.S. history and AP language a composition, despite their difficulty, and AP literature and composition is a great follow-up class to be able to take senior year.
