CLEMMONS — Third quarter is halfway through at West, and students are busily preparing for all the events that the beginning of spring offers.
Winter athletics have wrapped up their seasons, with both varsity basketball teams playing their final regular season games this past Monday, Feb. 19, the boys against Parkland and the girls against Reagan.
The two teams both hosted East Forsyth and visited Mount Tabor last week as well, with the boys taking a 79-60 win over the Eagles on Feb. 13 and falling 85-73 to the Spartans on Feb. 16. The girls team followed the same pattern, with a 36-30 win over East Forsyth and a 51-36 loss to Mount Tabor.
The girls varsity wrestling team competed at their regional championships last week, leading to Jadyn Magallanes winning the 152-pound weight group, the first girls regional champion since the program’s debut at West. Eight total wrestlers were selecting as Central Piedmont Conference (CPC) All Conference members as well, four boys and four girls; congrats to Devon Eaves, Aiden Koontz, Lucas Nollette, Nathan O’Dell, Victoria Pioquinto, Ariana Merlos-Bueno, Millie Garcia-Olmedo and Jadyn Magallanes.
The Girls Service Club is hosting the second of its bi-school-year blood drives this month for Titan students and staff. As long as you are over the age of 16, you are eligible to register. Blood donations are currently at an all-time low in the past few decades all across the country, so any donation could be crucial in saving a life. The event is always a great community builder as well, so register and come out on Feb. 28 to do your part.
West’s annual talent show last week on Feb. 13 was a huge success and a great fundraiser for the performing arts’ production of “Anastasia” in March. Congratulations to all the performers.
The Titan ACE Team finished out their season undefeated and as the top English team in the county, with strong wins over academic competition powerhouses like Atkins. The team moved into the playoff portion of their season earlier this week.
West’s annual poet laureate contest is looking for its next winner. Submissions to the contest are open through the end of February and will then be reviewed by the Titan National English Honor Society (NEHS) and voted on by West’s English teachers. If you would like to enter, contact English Department Chair Stuart Egan for more details. NEHS is also hosting a book drive for students who are no longer going to be using books they bought for past English classes. Bring donations by room 1028 to help out some future students.
Have a great rest of your week, Titans.
