With the final AP exams concluding over the next couple of days and classes beginning to start prepping for state end-of-course exams and teacher-made finals, the 2023-24 school year is almost in the rearview mirror. Many Titans are looking forward to the end-of-year banquets for different classes and clubs that will be held over the next few weeks to celebrate the end of the school year, and everyone is excited about summer break, in spite of the shortened summer due to the earlier start date for next school year.

With unexcused absences being counted toward final exam exemptions this year for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, many students are powering through these last couple of weeks to make sure they do not have to take their finals. Exam exemption status is per class, regarding only unexcused absences in that particular class. Five or fewer unexcused absences and an A, three or fewer and a B or one or fewer and a C gets you exempt from having to take the final in that class. Students will be notified of their tentative exam exemption status by May 24, although absences past that point before the exam may still be counted at the discretion of the teacher.

Senior Awards Day, the last big event before graduation for the Class of 2024, will be held next Friday, May 24. Seniors will take a class photo on the football field and then gather in the Simpson Gym for awards to be presented. Students will be exempt from their afternoon classes after festivities conclude around 12.

Titan athletics have had some big successes in the end of their seasons leading into their postseasons. Despite their 2-1 loss to East Forsyth on May 8, the girls varsity soccer team still managed to clinch the Central Piedmont Conference title, finishing 13-1 in CPC matchups. The girls took down Davie at home in their first game of the state playoffs, advancing to face Cuthbertson at home tonight. The varsity baseball team started their state playoff run last week with a 6-3 home win over Hough on May 8 and a 3-1 victory at home over Southeast Guilford on May 10. The boys then faced Reagan in the next round on Tuesday. The girls varsity lacrosse team was also CPC champions this year, starting their state playoff run with an 18-3 home win over Southeast Guilford on May 3.

Unfortunately, the girls then took a 20-11 loss to Marvin Ridge in the second round. The varsity softball team had a similar result, winning their first state playoff game 4-3 at home against East Forsyth on May 7, but ultimately being taken down by Northwest Guilford 2-1 on the road on May 10.

We’re almost to the end of the year, Titans. Let’s make these next few weeks count.
