Among those waiting to turn their tassels at the graduation ceremony of West Forsyth High School Saturday, June 9 will be nine sets of twins and graduates from 19 countries, including the U.S.
The ceremony is scheduled for noon at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, and 563 are expected to graduate. Among those will be nine students who received full academic scholarships to NC State University, Wake Forest University, West Point Military Academy, Duke University, Appalachian State University, Air Force ROTC, Army ROTC and two to East Carolina State University.
Full athletic scholarships were given to six students who will attend High Point University, Clemson University, Campbell University, Hampton University, UNC-Wilmington, and Houston Baptist University.
Jennifer Wyshner, director of student services, said, “This year’s senior class has proven the age old adage — hard work pays off. Earning over $22 million in scholarships and grants, the Class of 2018 has impressive talents. Whether they are attending college, joining the military or work force, these seniors are committed to making an impact. Students of this generation are making sure their voices are heard. We have seen evidence of their ability to come together as a group and express what is important to them. This class of students is made up of leaders and go-getters, a group we are not only proud to graduate, but hopeful and excited about what they will bring to society.”
Among the grads, four percent plan to enter the workforce; three percent plan to enter the military; five percent are undecided or considering schools; 30 percent will enter community college or trade school, and 58 percent plan to attend a four-year college or university.
Native countries of the grads are China, Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Iraq, Mexico, Myanmar, Panama, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia, Venezuela and Vietnam.
