Now that schedules are becoming routine and students have made it past the unfamiliar early stages of the school year, first quarter is in full swing. Cool weather is in the air as autumn makes its way to the village, providing the perfect conditions for Friday night football and spending time outdoors. The Titans are having an eventful beginning to their September, from sports successes to other school-wide activities.
The Titans met success at their first home football game of the season against Oak Grove High School. Winning 36-10, the team was cheered on by the jam-packed student section. The crowd arrived showing their best school spirit, decked out in florals and colorful vacation attire to fit the game’s “Hawaiian” theme. The students brought that same support just last Friday for the second home game against Weddington, wearing all things U.S.A in honor of the “Salute to Service” event to celebrate veterans and all military personnel in the stands. Despite the team’s loss, the Titans were sure to show their school spirit and will continue to bring energy to the crowd every Friday night.
Lunchtime was made extra interesting last week thanks to a “Lunchroom Takeover” by Varsity Esports & STEM League (VESL), in which students and staff engaged in a friendly competition of gaming. The group had a station set up in the cafeteria lobby and let anyone interested try their hand at online sports. The visit allowed students to learn about esports, adopt new skills, and encouraged them to join the VESL league at West.
Participating in activities around school is a perfect way to explore interests and meet new faces, and the Titans have an upcoming opportunity to do just that. Students in extracurriculars are preparing for next week’s Club Rush, an event where students can interact with and learn about the various clubs that West has to offer. Club members represent their activities by running their stands and working to recruit new participants. The Titans are busy creating informational posters and booths to draw students to activities and get their peers involved. Hosted during lunch on Sept. 19, Club Rush gives all students the opportunity to get a glimpse of the many activities they can choose to join this year.
It’s safe to say that the year is gearing up and the Titans are having a busy, yet exciting first quarter. Students are making their way to the events around campus and are bringing their Titan Pride everywhere with them.
