Mable Lee Ballard Harrington
Mable Lee Ballard Harrington, 93, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, surrounded by those she loved with every ounce of her being. Previously a resident of Raleigh, she has been a resident of Clemmons since 2000, a few years following the death of her husband, Ben Davis Harrington Jr. in December 1997.
Mable was born in Harnett County to Earl and Blonza Ballard. She spent her formative years in the rural community of Kipling, where she and Ben became high school sweethearts. Mable was a 1953 graduate of Greensboro College, where she served as president of the Athletic Club; was voted Miss Greensboro College; and served on the Student Council. She was also active with the Interfraternity Council at NCSU, where Ben was a student. Following completion of their college educations, they were married on June 6, 1953. They moved to Athens, Georgia, where Ben attended veterinary school at University of Georgia. Mable started teaching that fall in Jefferson, Georgia. Following Ben’s graduation from UGA, they moved to Raleigh, where they raised a family and lived until her move to Clemmons in 2000.
Hers was a life well lived, always both the student and teacher. She was always concerned for the well-being of others, especially her family and friends. Always serving in many ways at each church she attended and within the community she lived. She was an avid gardener and bird lover. She was also an automobile enthusiast, especially for her lime green Alfa convertible and her yellow Mini Cooper. She always stayed connected to others through text, phone calls and mail.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Giff (Brian) of Clemmons, son, Davis Harrington (Casey Fitzgivens) of Atlanta, grandsons Patrick Giff (Grace Martin) of Fairfax,
Virginia, and Kevin Giff (Dory MacMillan) of Durham; granddogs Gracie, Fitz and Oliver and and all of her many friends.
A service and reception will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, at Clemmons United Methodist Church. Donations to Forsyth Humane Society, Sierra Club or Trellis Hospice can be made in lieu of flowers.
For those who cannot attend, the service will be livestreamed on www.clemmonsumc.org under “Watch a Service.”
