Jarvis Monroe Hauser

Mr. Jarvis Monroe Hauser, 94, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, July 2, 2018, at his home. He was born March 19, 1924, in Forsyth County. Jarvis was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After 37 years, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a postal clerk. Jarvis was a lifelong member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees and was President and Secretary/Treasurer of the Bona Vita Sunday School Class. He also was a member of the Jonestown Civic Club, the Lewisville Historical Society and the Model A Club. Jarvis was very active in the Boy Scout program at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, Bethesda Moravian Church and Pine Grove United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Jarvis Hauser and Olie Charles Hauser; brother, Jack Hauser and granddaughter, Allison Ellender. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Johnnie Saylor Hauser; three children, Lee Hauser (Mary Anne) of St. Augustine, Fla., Jane Hauser Shore (Jack) of Winston-Salem and Ed Hauser of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Erin Whidden (Jason), Jessica Ellender, Errette Shore (Danielle), Lily, Jacob and Dylan Hauser and one great granddaughter. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018, at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Dr. Worth Green and the Rev. Joe Moore officiating. Interment followed in the church graveyard. The family received friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service. The family expresses their thanks to all the caregivers for their care of Jarvis. Sonja Bay Lowder

Mrs. Sonja Bay Lowder passed away Thursday afternoon, July 5, 2018, at Forsyth Medical Center. Sonja was born in Stuttgart, Germany, on Nov. 29, 1933, to the late Herman Wilhelm Bay and Gretchen Knapp Bay. Sonja was preceded in death by her husband Clarence E. “Bill” Lowder. She is survived by two daughters Sandra Gordon (Kyle) and Diana Baranowski; grandchildren Benjamin Gordon, Sarah Gordon, and Eli Baranowski; and various family and friends from Clemmons and Germany who have been supportive of her throughout the years. She was a long-time resident of Clemmons, N.C., and a member of Lady’s Auxiliary VFW Post 9010. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Parkway. Burial followed at Union Hill Baptist Church. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. Alan Buchanan Powers

Mr. Alan Buchanan Powers, 73, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Newark, N.J., on Sept. 23, 1944, to the late Alan Buchanan and Joan Kelly Powers. Alan enlisted into the Army during the Vietnam War and became a flight instructor after he returned. Later he worked for Eastern Airlines in I.T. and then for Piedmont/U.S. Airways also in I.T. where he retired. Alan loved cruising and traveling. He was a loving husband and father. Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Lynn Wager Powers; two sons, Michael Alan Powers and Ryan Robert Powers; siblings, Marc Powers (Stella), Peter Powers, (Anne), Paul Powers, Sarah Ann Firth (Chris), Ann Clare Wiener, John Powers (Angela), and Daniel Powers (Alice); also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. on  Monday, July 9, 2018, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church with Father Brian Cook officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. Martha Leonard Rierson

Martha Leonard Rierson died Sunday July 1, 2018, at her home in East Bend, N.C., after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Lewisville, N.C.

Mrs. Rierson was born in Greensboro in 1935 and attended Grimsley High School and UNCG, where she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music. She was a concert cellist and studied with Elizabeth Cowling at UNCG and Luigi Silva at Yale.  Upon graduation from college in 1958, she auditioned and won the assistant principal cellist position with the Atlanta Symphony; however, she was told that she would never sit principal because she was a woman. Pushing past that dynamic, she declined the opportunity and devoted her life to teaching. Mrs. Rierson’s students have gone on to long and distinguished careers with many of the major symphonies in the world.

In teaching, she found both the love for music as well as the love of her life. She met her husband when they were both teachers at Grimsley High School … she was the orchestra director and he was the band director. They married in 1968 in a whirlwind, two-week process from proposal to wedding that included music provided by one of Mrs. Rierson’s students.  That music was from the unaccompanied Bach cello suites and Mrs. Rierson often called the event “a concert with a wedding at intermission.”  Mrs. Rierson was married 32 years before her husband’s untimely passing in 2000.

Mrs. Rierson was a teacher, wife, mother, and constant caregiver. She loved baking and her students always found themselves with cupcakes on Bach’s, Beethoven’s and Mozart’s birthdays. She took care of her parents, her husband and her friends into old age. For the last 18 years, she was devoted to her church and to living retirement life on the family farm in Yadkin County, where she and her husband had built their dream home. She loved her family and especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren and always helping in any way that she could.

Mrs. Rierson is survived by her two sons and their families: Charles and wife Victoria of Atlanta, Ga., and their children Charlie and Lauren; Bryan and wife Jo of Garner, N.C., and their young son Harris. Mrs. Rierson is also survived by her six siblings: Shirley Swaim of Tempe, Ariz.; Susan Walker of Burlington, N.C.; Katherine Schlagg of Marietta, Ga.; Percy Leonard of Austin, Tex.; Vera Schneider of Bethesda, Md.; and Joe Leonard of Jamestown, N.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. on Friday July 6, 2018, at Frank Vogler and Sons funeral home in Clemmons.

The family asks that any memorials be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association or to Shiloh Lutheran Church in Lewisville.
