CLEMMONS —  In its most recent report on North Carolina schools, US News & World named Southwest Elementary the best elementary school in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district and No. 34 overall statewide.

According to the report, at Southwest Elementary, 84 percent of students scored at or above the proficient level for math and 80 percent scored at or above that level for reading.

Compared with the district, the school did better in math and reading, according to this metric.

In Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, 36 percent of students tested at or above the proficient level for reading and 38 percent tested at or above that level for math.

Southwest Elementary did better in math and better in reading in this metric compared with students across the state. In North Carolina, 46 percent of students tested at or above the proficient level for reading, and 48 percent tested at or above that level for math.

The student population of Southwest Elementary is 523 and the school serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

The school’s minority student enrollment is 35 percent. The student-teacher ratio is 15:1, which is the same as that of the district. The student population is made up of 46 percent female students and 54 percent male students. The school enrolls 39 percent economically disadvantaged students. There are 36 equivalent full-time teachers and 1 full-time school counselor.
