New monitoring devices could help cut down on speeding in Clemmons,
based on the comprehensive results from a recent traffic logix report for Fair Oaks Drive.
Gary Looper, village manager, updated the Clemmons Village Council during Monday night’s meeting on the data gathered from Sept. 9-16 for westbound traffic on Fair Oaks, where the speed limit is 35 mph.
“This is meant to be a one-time illustration to give you a sense of what you purchased with these $3,000 speed monitors,” Looper said. “There are various forms and graphs. It’s listed by day, by time, by percentage of speeders. We started out at Fair Oaks because we had a recent complaint of speeding at Fair Oaks. It’s really up to (Public Works Director) Larry (Kirby) and the deputies to decide where to put them on a case-by-case basis.”
Looper said that the Fair Oaks report includes a six-day stretch with 9,300 vehicles traveling at an average speed of 38 or 39 mph. He said that the data showed 66 percent of the vehicles were going 35 mph or less while 34 percent were at plus 5 mph or greater (and 9 percent of those were at plus 10 mph).
“The question is what is the best way in which to use this tool,” Looper said. “I personally would place these monitors at most of the major connections that we have in Clemmons as defined by Larry and take the percentages and start comparing and contrasting. Where can we place our traffic officers to be the greatest benefit to slow speeders.
