Bingham, Lucinda Elise Petersen
LEWISVILLE — Lucinda Elise Petersen Bingham, passed away peacefully on Sept. 13 at Duke Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Cindy was born on Jan. 12, 1942, in Hartford, Conn., to Marion Fay and Raymond Clarence Petersen and grew up in nearby Bloomfield. She graduated from The Chaffee School in Windsor, Conn., where she played sports, developed an affinity for mathematics and reading, and made life-long friends. In the summers she picked tobacco, worked at a candy store, and eventually used her math skills at a life insurance research firm. Cindy entered Middlebury College, where she majored in math and met Gordon. They graduated together in 1964 and married in 1966. They moved to Evanston, Ill., where Gordon enrolled in graduate school and Cindy went to work for Washington National Insurance. Her experience in insurance and skill in math led to her being one of their first employees to be trained on a new thing: computers. Cindy and Gordon moved to the campus of Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1966, where she was recruited to develop the college’s computer infrastructure. Here their two sons were born, and she became an early adopter of the working mom lifestyle. They moved again, in 1972, to Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., where Cindy implemented the college’s administrative computer systems. In addition to her career and raising her sons, she was also involved in the local community. Their move to Lewisville in 1981 meant a shift from small colleges to a Fortune 500 company (R.J. Reynolds), where Cindy began a long, full-time consultancy. With a group of women at RJR who nicknamed themselves “the Data Madams” she led a large project to convert to a new computer database system and train employees how to use it. During this time, she also helped support Gordon’s career and volunteered in many other community capacities. Cindy and Gordon retired in 1999, but retirement didn’t last long. From 2000-2005 they ran the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools, where Cindy handled all the financial and logistical details. They created a website and newsletter, planned workshops and conferences, and recruited sponsors. After her second retirement, Cindy occupied herself with many of her life-long interests: sewing, knitting, gardening, walking, and reading. She enjoyed being on the Board of the Friends of the Lewisville Library and volunteering at the Community Care Center, a free medical clinic for low-income clients. She is survived by her husband Gordon, sons Christopher and Matthew; daughter-in-law Whitney Allen; grandchildren Alex, John, Katie and Lucy; her dear sister Janice Petersen Wilson; niece Ashley Maina, and Ashley’s husband Mike and son Luciano. She was predeceased by her nephew Erik Wilson. A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 29. at 2 p.m. at Lewisville United Methodist Church. Cindy always valued education and community service, so in lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Bingham Scholarship Fund at Middlebury College, the Marion Petersen Scholarship Fund at The Loomis-Chaffee School, or the Community Care Center in Winston-Salem.
