Couriering the area this week in 1971 – Carl Cook, president of the Clemmons Jaycees presented W. A. Hunter with the Jaycees Citizen of the Year award.

Officers for 1972 were elected at the meeting of the Lewisville Civic Club held at the community center. The officers were David Rock, president; Leo Harrell, vice president; Bob Adams, secretary; James Arnold, assistant secretary; Bud Fulton, treasurer; Wilbur Hill, assistant treasurer and Gilmer Binkley and James Wilson, directors.

The home room mothers of the Clemmons Elementary PTA held a coffee hour for the school’s teachers in the social room of the Baptist Church. Mrs. George Cook was chairman of the event. Mrs. Bruce Stolba and Mrs. Ken Binkley assisted.

Wiley H. Gunter was chosen by his fellow Lewisville Jaycees as the winner of the Project of the Month award for September. Gunter chaired the Autumn Festival Project.

Three West Forsyth gridders were named to the 23-member 1971 All City County football team. Those named were John Hauser, Clay Vogler and Michael Gregg.

First Lieutenant Ernest K. Whitener, III, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Whitener, Jr. of Clemmons, left for South Vietnam.

West Forsyth High School’s Norma Jean Harbin was named Speedball coach of the year. The Titan girls won the speedball title.

Dan Edward Spaugh, a former West Forsyth High student and a Western Carolina University senior, played the lead role in the production of the WCU Department of Speech and Theatre Arts, “The Firebugs.”

Angela Parker became Clemmons’ first “mail lady” carrier. She began as a substitute carrier assisting Roy Nifong the regular route carrier on Clemmons Route 2.

Members of the Girls Scout Troop 106 on hand for investiture services held at the Lewisville School auditorium were – Crystal Brewer, Allison Atkins, Debbie Binkley, Cindy Doub, Renee Johnson, Sonya Clodfelter, Lisa Pennington, Darling Dezern, Kathy Miller, Ashley Atkins, Karen Cox, Teresa Dearman, Rosemary Coley, Susan Cavanaugh, Donna Eller and Sabre Arnold.

Airman Martin Alan Swain, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Swaim of Lewisville, complete his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Airman I. C. Gary F. Freeman, of Lewisville, was named outstanding man in his unit at Webb Air Force Base, Texas.

Navy Petty Officer First Class Billy R. Cole, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert H. Cole of Lewisville, was a crewmember of the newly commissioned destroyer escort USS Elmer Montgomery to be home ported in Newport, Rhode Island.
