WINSTON-SALEM — Forsyth Tech is offering students and faculty the opportunity to earn college credits in the Study Away Program. Three trips will be offered in 2019 to earn college credit while experiencing new cultural opportunities. Through the Global Scholars and Humanities Enrichment Series, students, faculty and staff may register to travel abroad to Argentina for 15 days; to Ireland for 10 days or to study locally for four days in the Gullah Geechee areas near Savannah, Ga. and Hilton Head, S.C.
In addition to learning about the culture in each location, the focus of study will be different on each trip. In Argentina, students will focus on sustainability, by visiting a local farm school and a traditional Argentine ranch; in Ireland the platform of study is learning about global health care issues in Northern Ireland; and while in Savannah, Ga, and Hilton Head, S.C. the program will focus on the Gullah Geechee culture and ecology in the local rivers.
Global experience is an important part of a 21st century education. Study abroad and domestic travel programs gives students the opportunity to gain a new perspective, learn about diverse cultures and develop a better understanding of the disconnectedness of our world.
“Part of being ready for the global economy is being an informed and engaged global citizen,” said Laura Hortal, department chair, Humanities, Fine Arts and Communication. “Studying Away, when designed in a meaningful and purposeful way, can be the primary vehicle for global competence. Students are not only traveling away, they are gaining a life-changing experience that will impact the way they see the world around them.”
The Ireland trip is open to the community, the others are for faculty, staff and students only. Registration is full for the Argentina trip, however, those interested may be included on a waiting list.
