Couriering the area this week in 1978 — The Forsyth County Board of Education decided to build a new $2.75 million Clemmons Elementary School near the existing buildings and recommended that the project start immediately.

Kevin Scott Casey, 14-year-old quarterback and safety for the Tiny Greyhound Midgets in the Pop Warner Football program, was named a member of the National Pop Warner All-American Team of Scholar Athletes.

Forsyth County 4-H’er Carol Myers returned from a six-month trip to Hungary as a cultural exchange delegate.

Mrs. Thomas (Jettie) Fix, of Lewisville, was awarded the title of “Citizen of the Year” by the Lewisville Civic Club. She received this highest award given by the club at the annual banquet and awards ceremony.

Stephanie Boyles, of Clemmons, was named 1978 Grand Champion in the Ladies Western Pleasure Class of the NC Appaloosa Association. The presentation of awards and trophies were presented by the president of the association, Denny Millsaps.

The Edgewood Garden Club Christmas decorations contest was judged by Mr. and Mrs. S. F. McMillan and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Snyder. First place winner was the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Austin. Second place winners went to the Millers and honorable mention was given to the Henry Eberts.

Chuck Grubbs received a Special Citation Award for the NC Recreation and Parks Society at the 34^th annual conference of the society at the Benton Convention Center.

Brownie Troop 490, of Lewisville, had a Christmas party and Santa’s workshop to make gifts for their mothers at the home of one of their leaders, Mrs. Shirley Barnett. Those brownies in attendance were: Carla Barnes, Stacie Redmon, Kim Rector, Julie Swicegood, Amy Cox, Billie Jo Transou, Monique Selfslaugh, Melissa Rogers, Cindy Queen, Renee Pierce, Tracie Chamberlin, Annette Redmon, Bonnie Hutchins, Amy Styron and Donna Todd.

Sgt. William Pack, formerly of Clemmons, was among the top five graduates in the ASAF Non-commissioned Officer Leadership School (NCOL) Class 79-B, at graduation ceremonies at Williams AFB in Chandler, Arizona.

West Forsyth football player, Tim Salley received a football scholarship to Wake Forest University.

West Forsyth students, Tammy Pendergrass and Jeff Catlin, won the dance contest sponsored by the West Forsyth Student Council and the Girls Service Club.

Navy Machinist’s Mate Third Class William L Pinnix, son of Robert L. Pinnix of Clemmons, completed the Basic Machinist’s Mate Course at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes.
