Couriering the area this week in 1968 — The new officers were elected for the Clemmons Jaycees. Those elected were Charles Doyle, Carl Lawrence, Bud Sheets, Tom Butler, Jake Douthit, Ralph Bolt, Gary Herman and the new president, Harrell Powell.

New officers elected for the Clemmons Jaycettes were Mrs. Gary Herman, Mrs. Charles Doyle, Mrs. Bobby Reed, president, Mrs.Carl Lawrence, Mrs. Lewis Withers and Mrs. Jake Douthit.

An announcement of interest to area residents was issued by Leslie Frye and D.C. Lawrence, developers of the Clemmons Village Shopping Center, that Winn-Dixie Food Store would be opening in the fall in the shopping center.

Eleven West Forsyth High School students were inducted into the “Quill and Scroll” International Honor Society for high school journalists. Those inducted were Mary Etchison, Phyllis Blackburn, Wanda Wooten, Tony Chappell, Johnny Kimel, Patti Davis, Marsha Foster, Pat Wise, Phyllis Leagans, Darla Morgan and Steve Pruett.

Open for business this week was Barney’s, a self-service hamburger restaurant in the Clemmons Center.

West Forsyth High School student, Neville Chaney, was elected Student Council president. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Chaney. He played varsity football, basketball and baseball at West. Frank Denaro, a West sophomore was elected vice president, Gail Houston was elected secretary and Beverly Adams was elected treasurer.

Seaman Apprentice Roy R. Wilson, USN, 19, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy R. Wilson of Clemmons, graduated from nine weeks of Navy basic training at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois.

Center Grove Baptist Church of Clemmons called the Rev. Randy Elrod as its pastor. They church had been without a pastor for two years.

The new officers for the Clemmons Business Association were Joe Farrell, president, Doug Boyer, president-elect, A. B. Harrell, treasurer and Carolyn Johnson, secretary.

Ken Gabard, a senior at West Forsyth High School, was awarded a W.N. Reynolds Scholarship to attend Duke University in Durham. The scholarship was for excellent students who were interested in attending Duke and who had a parent employed at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
