Robert Griffen Brame 

Dec. 31, 1929 – June 14, 2014 

Dr. Robert Griffen Brame, fondly known as Bob to his many friends and family members, was born in Wendell, NC to William and Lillian Brame. Bob was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be missed throughout the state and the region. In addition to his commitment to those he served selflessly throughout his career, he found time for trips to Europe with each of his grandchildren and was always available to enjoy time with his family and friends. He loved playing tennis, and never lost his love of reading and learning. For more than fifty years, Dr. Brame was a pioneer and leader in women’s health care in North Carolina. He was the only obstetrician-gynecologist in the state to have served on the faculty of the medical schools of Duke, Wake Forest, the University of North Carolina and at East Carolina University, where he served as the first chairman of the OB-GYN department at the Brody School of Medicine there. He also served on the faculties of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Carolina’s Medical Center. At different times in his career he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for numerous medical societies and published more than 35 articles in major medical journals. Early in his career he also served our country as a physician in the Navy for two years. He combined the unique qualities of an academician, researcher, teacher, and compassionate caregiver; he was greatly loved by his patients, students, and peers. Bob Brame was one of six children, and is survived by one sibling, his sister, Elizabeth Henry of Wendell; his wife of 60 years, Nancy Hounshell Brame, his children Griff Brame and Karen Graham and her husband Don, his grandchildren Andrew, Emily and Will Brame; Dean, Jenny and Matt Graham; and Chris and Holly Colvin. In addition, he will be missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 18th at 1:00 p.m. at Clemmons Presbyterian Church in Clemmons, North Carolina. A reception will follow at the church.
