The Humane Solution Spay-Neuter Program, in partnership with Forsyth Humane Society, is holding an event to spay-neuter feral cats. This event, known as Forsyth Feral Fix, will be held on Feb. 9 at Forsyth Humane Society University North Campus, 5570 Sturmer Park Circle, in Winston-Salem. Humane Solution’s mission is to end euthanasia as a means to control the pet overpopulation and this philosophy extends to feral cats. These two organizations are working together to reduce cat overpopulation that results in the euthanasia of healthy cats. In conjunction with the 90% save rate by 2023 initiative #SaveFursyth, this partnership is getting to the crux of the animal overpopulation crisis. Cats can breed up to three times a year, with average litter sizes of five. Feral cats are not domestic pets and are not adoptable, therefore it is a more humane approach to spay-neuter them and let them live their lives outdoors, where caretakers feed, water, and provide proper shelter for them.

At this clinic, approximately 40 feral cats will be spayed-neutered, vaccinated, microchipped (optional), given a flea/tick treatment, tattooed and ear-tipped, along with other services that the veterinarians deem necessary. They will then be returned to their location, a practice known as trap, neuter, return or TNR. A team of veterinarians and vet assistants from across the Triad are donating their services, which allows this event to be free to the cat caretakers. The surgeries will be performed at the Forsyth Humane Society’s University North Campus.

This is the second year that Humane Solution Spay-Neuter Program has sponsored the Forsyth Feral Fix. Last January, it invited the NCSU Veterinary School to come to Forsyth County, where 46 cats were spayed-neutered by vet students over a weekend. Since that time, Humane Solution implemented a feral cat program that allows cat caretakers the opportunity to spay-neuter their colonies for $10 per cat, which includes vaccinations, flea/tick treatment, optional microchip and ear tip.
