Sammy May Smith Conrad

Sammy May Smith Conrad passed away on Feb. 28, 2020, in Clemmons. She was born on May 1, 1936, in Winston-Salem to Aubrey and Stella Smith. She retired from Wake Forest University after 30 years as the recruiting coordinator. She volunteered at the contact program. She was a lifelong member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. Conrad was an avid gardener. She enjoyed supplying hostas and dogwoods to the people of Clemmons. Conrad was a loving and attentive grandmother and enjoyed her weekends watching her grandchildren as they grew up.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Bobby Gray Smith Sr. Conrad leaves behind her daughter, Regina Poindexter (Donald); grandchildren, Michelle Houck (Rodney) and David Rominger (Angela); great-grandchildren Victoria Houck and Zoe Rominger; son-in-law, Michael Rominger; sister-in-law, Phoebe Smith; and many other loved ones.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Clemmons First Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Forsyth County Humane Society.

Meredith Paige Cortesis

Miss Meredith Paige Cortesis, 23, of Clemmons, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on Sunday, March 1, 2020, in Boca Raton, Florida. Cortesis was born in Junction City, Kansas, on March 4, 1996. She attended Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools and Forsyth Technical Community College. Cortesis was funny, unapologetically raw, witty, always her expressive self and a lover of people, especially those who felt alone or were struggling. She was a kind person and understood struggles, challenges and victories. While living in south Florida, she quickly made friends that made an impact on her life including JoAnn Jackson, Josh Luck, Nicole Laska and Kelly Koza. Cortesis had long-lasting local friendships as well with Kevin Veach and Rayanne Holton. She loved animals, especially her cat, Winston. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers George J. Cortesis and William F. Poe Sr. Cortesis is survived by her parents Johnny and Terry Cortesis; one brother, Nathan Cortesis; grandmothers Frances Cortesis and Jeanette Poe; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services for Cortesis were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2020, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Don Gordon officiating. Interment followed the service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.  The family received friends from 12:45-1:45 p.m. on Monday prior to the service at the funeral home. Johnny and Terry were grateful to become parents to Nathan and were overjoyed when they received the phone call that they were going to receive their second blessing, Meredith. James ‘Benny’ Davis

Mr. James “Benny” Davis Sr., 77, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2020, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Yadkin County on Oct. 21, 1942, to the late Guy and Katherine Welch Davis. Davis retired from Amp Inc. as a machinist. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and camping. Davis loved to play in the AMP golf league and many different bowling leagues. Surviving is his wife of 40 years, Nancy Jones Davis; three children, Jamie Davis (Kitty), Holly Davis, and Kim Combs (Sandy); three step-children, Markus Reid, Joel Reid (Ella), and Jeffrey Reid (Randi); 10 grandchildren, Trip, Olivia, Kati Grace, Braxton, Brantley, Eric, Joel, Brian, Abigail, and Madison; eight great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Felicity, Nolan, McKensey, Nicholas, Skyler, T.J., and Tyler; sister, Jackie Hoots (Vernon); also surviving are several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2020, at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family received friends from 12:45-1:45 p.m. prior to the service. The family would like to thank Trellis Supportive Care for all the love and compassion that was shown to Davis. Kelly Nelson Hauser

Kelly Nelson Hauser, 55, of Lewisville, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2020 after a courageous three-year battle with cancer.

“The meek shall inherit the earth” — Matthew 5:5. To those who knew Hauser, it would be difficult to find someone meeker than she was.

“Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thy self” — Matthew 22:39. Again, to those who knew Hauser, she was the image of God through Christ on loving one another.

“So then by their fruit you will recognize them” — Matthew 7:20. Hauser was a cosmetologist at Village Hair Design for 25 years. The owner of the salon, Gray Smith, her co-workers, and her clients were like family to her.

Hauser was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church in Clemmons. Her church family was very important to her. It was hard on her not to be able to attend church in her final weeks. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Rhoades life class for comforting Hauser with their prayers and messages.

Hauser was preceded in death by her father, I.J. Nelson and mother, Ethel Nelson.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Hauser, who’s only regret is not marrying her 10 years earlier (that is how long they dated). But to God be the glory for 26 years of marriage.

Also surviving are Hauser’s mother-in-law, Lydia Hauser, who thought of her as the daughter she never had; sister Robin Nelson; niece Patrice Larson (James) and their children Maquela and Emeryson Grace; brother-in-law Michael Hauser (Tammy); aunt Lolene Mathews and her children Alana and Beverly; aunt Dorothy Canada; uncle Dale Canada and (Glenda); special friends Debra Rierson (Steve) and their children Sarah and Will; Kay Adams (Tim); Charity Wagenti (Michael); and Jeanie Reich (Mark). The family’s prayer is anyone that new Hauser would remember her example as a follower of Christ our Lord. “For the hearts of the people have grown dull, their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear” — Matthew 13:15-16

A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Center Grove Baptist Church in Clemmons, with Dr. Steve Corts officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be private at the request of the family.
