Doris Riddle Faulk Combs

Mrs. Doris Riddle Faulk Combs, 86, of Clemmons, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2020. Combs was born in Yancey County on Jan. 30, 1934, to the late Oscar Robert Riddle and Chloe Bailey Riddle. Combs retired from Belk after 18 years of service. She loved spending time in the mountains, especially Asheville, Mount Mitchell, and Burnsville. Combs was an avid golfer and a member of golf associations at both Tanglewood Park and Wilshire Golf Club. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronda Erwin Faulk, and her second husband, John Walter Combs. Combs is survived by her three daughters, Sandra James (Eddie), Karen McKinney, and Brenda Hurst (Keith); five grandchildren, Travis McKinney (Ashley), Ashley Myers (Matt), Candice Thomas (Adam), Amanda Crawford (Ron), and Alyssa Hurst; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Claudia Riddle DeJong. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date in Asheville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Elms, 7449 Fair Oaks Dr., Clemmons, NC 27012. Brendan Davis

Brendan Davis, manager of Green Room Brewing and Bottlenose Brewing in Jacksonville, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on March 29, 2020, at his home in Neptune Beach, Florida. Davis was born on June 30, 1982, in Worthington, Ohio and spent much of his life in Clemmons (graduate of West Forsyth High) and Jacksonville, Florida.

The light of his life was his daughter, Linley Ruth Davis. The amazing love they shared was filled with fun, laughter, and adventure. They took trips to the zoo, swam with the dolphins, surfed in the ocean, and started most of their days together with homemade pancakes.

Davis’ infectious smile, warm personality, and big bear hugs will be greatly missed. He truly was the barkeeper who remembered your name and knew your favorite drink. He was loyal, cared deeply, and was passionate about helping others.

In addition to Linley, Davis is survived by many family members in North Carolina: parents, Gerry Davis (Karen LaChapelle) and Jan (Dan) Collins; sister Amanda Rittenberry (Charlie), and sons Isaac, Aaron and Jordan Burns; and brother Dylan (Kristen), and children Jadyn, Raegan and Douglas Davis. He is also survived by many very special grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, step-siblings and nieces and nephews, and Linley’s mom, LeighAnne Curley.

Ella ‘Maude’ Culler Martin

Mrs. Ella “Maude” Culler Martin, 86, formerly of Cana, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2020, at Clemmons Village II Assisted Living.  She was born in Carroll County on May 3, 1933, to the late William Byram and Louvina Stanley Culler. Martin retired from St. Paul School, and was a member of Cana Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Joyce Carden (Ken) of Lewisville; sister-in-law Lillian Bowman and Laurie Farris (Jim); nieces and nephews and her precious companion, Kenzie. In addition to her parents, Martin was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Martin; a sister, Gladys Stanley; brothers, Gene Culler and George Culler. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Cana Baptist Cemetery Fund, c/o Russell Vass, 318 White Pines Country Club Rd., Mt. Barbara Hunter Rickard

Barbara Hunter Rickard passed away on Monday, March 30, 2020, after a brief illness.

She was a life-long resident of Clemmons. Her parents were James Estes Hunter and Vena Doub Hunter. The Hunter family has a long and impressive presence in Clemmons history dating back to the 1800s.

Rickard graduated from Clemmons High School and attended Women’s College in Greensboro. She was employed by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System until retirement.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bert (Jack) Rickard and two children, son Brad Rickard and daughter Diana Rickard (Mike); grandsons Michael Ragan (Edith) and Austin Rickard; two great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Kaitlin Ragan; brother Jim Hunter (Kathy) and mom-by-marriage, Arline Hunter.

Rickard lived life to the fullest, and she was passionate about her many and varied interests. Because of this, she formed lasting friendships with a vast number of folks.

Her many interests included her family, her community, and her church, Clemmons United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful and active member.

Rickard had a variety of hobbies that enriched her life. One of these hobbies was contract bridge. She was an original member of a bridge “foursome” that began playing weekly in the early 1960s and continued for almost 60 years.

Golf was a sport that she enjoyed and she became quite an accomplished golfer. Rickard was a member of the Tanglewood Ladies Golf Association and served as president for several years. This became an opportunity to expand her circle of life-long friends.

Barbara and Jack were members of the local Shag Club; they traveled frequently to North Myrtle Beach to join other friends to enjoy this special form of recreation. As a couple, they were admired as practically professional dancers and were inducted into the National Beach Shaggers Hall of Fame.  Here again, Barbara was surrounded by a group that shared a common interest and this formed another brigade of special friends.

Both Barbara and Jack were regulars at the Clemmons Y, and made it a point to work out several times a week. Barbara was very dedicated to a health and fitness regimen which included a healthy diet and regular exercise. She would share many of her healthy recipes with friends.

All of these interests involved interacting and enjoying the many friendships she formed and treasured. Rickard will be remembered for her beautiful persona, her engaging personality, her dedication to family and friends and the vast number of enduring friends who will miss her but had the good fortune to be a part of her life’s journey.

Alice Faye White

Alice Faye White, 58, of Clemmons, passed away Monday morning, April 27, 2020, to go be with her Lord and Savior following a lengthy illness. Her mother, Mildred White, and uncle, Clint Ellis, were by her side at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. White was born Dec. 17, 1961, and spent most of her adult life in Jacksonville, Florida, as a manager of DOT Warehouse, until her health failed her. She was fun-loving, enjoyed laughing and shooting pool and she had never met a stranger. She loved her cat and dog as she never had children. Later when she was no longer able to drive, she became homebound with her mother and her cellphone became her connection to the outside world. She enjoyed getting pictures from family and friends. White was preceded in death by her father, Harvey White and an infant brother, Donald White. She is survived by her mother; two brothers, Frank and Carl White; two nephews, Andrew and Justin White; two great-nephews and a great-niece. Due to COVID-19, a private graveside service will be held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
